Just spotted that Curry's PC World are doing 50% off the Now TV Smart Sticks if you trade in an old (2018 or older) now TV box or any media streamer.

I have loads of the old boxes lying around from previous deals, so was happy to get a new stick with 2mths entertainment for £9.99.

This seems to be valid on all of the smart stick packages, but In Store only.....

Conditions state:
Trade in any old media streamer (2018 model or older) and get 50% off a NOW TV Stick. In-store only, available for reserve and collect. One trade-in per device per person. Offer ends 19/03/2019.

How would they know what a TV streamer is? Surely you could take along some non-descript USB stick?

Or what about some old video card - they used to be used for streaming back before USB streamers became fashionable.

Been using it for 18 months with no problem, why not get their 14 day free trial and see?
Good deal. And these sticks have Netflix as well which I didn't realize. Bonus for my son who hasn't got Netflix on his telly.

Have they tried powerline adapters? There won't be any reception / buffering problems with these. Can only be used with the NowTV boxes that have a LAN/ethernet port. Couple of examples at Amazon from £25 below.

One unit plugs into a mains plug point & linked to the main router with an ethernet cable, while the other unit into a mains plug point near the TV (not recommended to use either unit via a cable/plug extension of any kind). Then from the latter unit into the NowTV box with another ethernet cable.

Tenda PH3 1000Mbps Powerline Adapter Kit with Single Port/Home Plug AV2 UK Extender, for fast & stable network expansion, UK Plug Version - Pack of 2

TP-Link TL-PA4010PKIT Passthrough Powerline Adapter Starter Kit, No Configuration Required, UK Plug, Pack of 2 (this has a useful plug 'passthrough' if they're running out of mains plug points).

I'd prefer to give them the white one and put the black one in my room (and the stick in the sitting room), but don't know if they would take the white one - I could take both along I suppose and just ask them if they'd take just the white one I suppose.

Cracking story.

The stick is HDMI, so it keeps your USB port on the TV free

No I meant a usb port on the stick, like the black boxes had. With no developer mode now it doesn't matter anyway then

Cheers G
Meh I got the old white box at launch for £10, it was good adding catch-up apps to a non-smart TV but they're too restrictive and have a limited range of apps.
I presume you can't sideload any apps on these?
Great deal 🔥🔥
Is it a physical voucher/code which can be added to existing account or is it the new preloaded pass??

I use Amazon, Netflix, and NOW TV, not to mention occasionaly build UI myself, and I think NOW TV is the best by a vast margin.

Though that's mainly because the other two don't really care about what *you* want. and it helps a lot that NOW TV have by far the most best recognizable content and don't have to tie themselves in knots trying to disguise their library.

Thanks. I thought as much after they made an effort to prevent it on the boxes.

Will stick with my Ethernet now tv box thanks, why would you want to trade in for a wifi one I never know
Maybe trying to get rid of older hackable boxes..???

Only as good as your wifi, mine works fine here in uk and in spain.

Nothing against content, that I find really good as others are definitely getting stale but the viewing experience is just average at best across most platforms, although phone app is probably the best.

Viewing on a PC/laptop is just plain clunky and have to use a separate piece of software after selecting something in the browser. Website is a mess on my ultrabook, have to zoom right out to select the right episodes because it seems to consistently forget what I've watched.

The Now TV little box thing isn't great either and considerable lag compared to Netflix and Amazon apps in my Samsung TV (surprised it doesn't support it to begin with). Sometimes it likes to completely glitch out and just ignore the remote once episode starts playing despite lighting up on the box like it's getting a signal (yeah, I've tried different batteries).

Phone app is good but still suffers from the weaknesses of the overall service. "Continue watching" very often just wipes clean so need to go into search to select the right show. It quite often seems to forget which episodes I've watched and very annoyingly if I finish an episode half way through it would just mark it as finished next time I come back to it so I need to backtrack and find where I left off.

It's also rather silly that they still seem to be only pumping out everything in 720p, others already moving some content in 4k although it's only something noticeable on the TV.

Then it's just small annoyances like you can't search the library by an actor/actress name and language/subtitle selection is lacking in a big way, encountered a few shows like Modern Family where some seasons have no subtitles at all.

So yeah content is great but it's really frustrating to use sometimes, it forgets what I was watching, need to manually search for the show, then it would just point me to S1E1 of the show when I'm on season 6 and to top it all off, it forgot where I left off when I stopped watching the episode. Afterwards the remote glitches out and I can't even pause the show to grab more snacks. All of that literally happened today as I'm trying to catch up with my GoT

edit: I didn't half write an essay

True, but most people will be trading in an unused box. The Wi-Fi ones are useful as they are more portable & can be used when you're away to plug directly into a hotel's TV for example - assuming their Wi-Fi's good enough, or you've brought along your own very portable (& hopefully reliable!) mobile Wi-Fi hotspot device.

Yep!, and no USB power/charging cable for it either ... :-(

All the arguably 'key elements' of what makes that streaming stick, a streaming stick are kinda missing, lol.

These are not part of the deal according to online - were they advertised instore as part of the deal?
Not got a stick but do have the smart box (not the pink one).
Think it’s great and you can plug your freeview aerial in as well so best of both worlds.

Why would you trade a smart box in for a stick
Didn’t realise Netflix had gone onto NowTV as an app... if only they would put Prime on there, they would totally own the market for streaming devices at these prices.

The stick uses a USB port for power, unless you plug it into the mains.

I'm not sure "reception" makes sense in a streaming context - perhaps you can get a better description of the problems they experienced... but it depends on many factors, not just strength/goodness of Wi-Fi signal but also how congested it is, other network devices' configuration and behaviour, the quality of the broadband service, all sorts of configuration...

But I've had no problems in two different Virgin Media - proper cable broadband - households.

Sorry but no, they are built by Roku but then sky reprogram for their own apps and no side loading of 3rd party apps like PLEX.

No it has a reduced number of apps: web.static.nowtv.com/ima…pdf

However it does have most UK catch up apps, although Amazon Prime Video is missing.
I do like the conspiracy theory idea someone posted here about there being an undiscovered way to re-enable developer mode on (maybe the white?) old boxes or hack them to get apps on there we used to, but suspect this is just a marketin strategy with maybe 4k comin in a new stick so they clearin old stock to shift subs & maybe recycle parts?

As I said mine works fine.
The only thing with these is because they're so cheap they're just landfill. If you could get dev access to them you'd be able to make much more use of them. Otherwise it's just a lot of WEEE recycling or flogging them to CEX for 50p.
