no offence but this stinks.
for 20 quid more get a ati hd3850

way more powerfull and dx10 and uses less juice

Here here...

Must agree. Those prices are inflated. This was £300 in 2005. There are much better performing newer cards in this price range available now. Cold.

but the 8400-8600 are pathetic and are the only cards in this price area, this is indeed a good deal. For £20 more, but you could say that about anything, £10 more for this and then only £10 more for this even better model etc etc.

This is for deals not comparisons.

I am in the market to replace a 6800 which has just given up the ghost. I would like to know what similarly priced cards you would recommend if this is not such a good deal?

this is a good deal HD3850 yes gives you DX10 but this going by toms hardware is close perfomance wise

Assuming your 6800is a GT see the ]HERE your car dand this is highlighted in blue

You highlighted the 7800 GTX 512MB version in the chart when this is the 256MB version which has much lower GPU & RAM clocks. A HD 3850 256MB is about 33% faster than the 7800 GTX 256MB according to the chart you linked to but cost £86 versus £60 which is over 40% more.

This is for hot deals, and to determine whether a deal is hot or not is must be compared to other offerings.

Overall yes, but those aren't the latest games being tested and some of them are limited by something else (Flight simulator X) which will seem to narrow the gap since all the cards get much the same result.

I suspect if you tested then both on current games then the HD3850 would turn out to be more than 40% faster.

Both cards have limitations of course, neither are going to be able to play the latest games at the highest settings and with 256mb of memory they're going to struggle with gaming at 1920x1200.
