A good, but cheap solution to running some games. I just ordered one as my Radeon X1600 won't play Mass Effect.

How can I find out what graphics card my pc can take?

Unfortunately I don't know. I only know mine because I asked someone on here about it. I too hope someone shares this info.

Bit long in the tooth, this one, and not a great performer with just 256MB of DDR2 RAM on a 128bit bus. You can probably get a secondhand Radeon 3850 for the same money, which'll perform far better than this.

Your card is either PCI or AGP but as AGP cards are going down the pan id say its PCI Just look at your motherboard AGP slot is brown if not its white which is PCI

PCI slots are white i ment PCI-E are blue which i didnt add

How can I tell if a 3850 would be compatible with my Dell Dimension E520?

Edit:
p.s. is the nvidea 7600XT better than the radeon X1600?

I think you need to know what mother board you have first, so then you know what ports are available to you.

An extremely useful program that will tell you the model of your MOBO is CPUID/CPU-Z
cpuid.com/

Download & install. Then run the program and there will be a tab along the top of the window called "Mainboard". Clicking that will show you the Manufacturer and Model of your motherboard.

Once you know the model, you can do some research into the specification of your motherboard.

I've no idea about the 7600XT or an X1600. It actually gets quite difficult to find accurate comparisons for cards of that sort of age, or of different generations. It's kind-of the problem with judging these old cards. With anything released over the past year or two, you can check performance on the TomsHardwareGuide VGA charts, which cover pretty much everything on the market, or if not, they cover something close enough to make the comparison. With a 7600 of any kind, you're going back four years, which is way too long.

Anyhow, the 3850 will work in your system if you've got a PCI-E slot and a power supply rated over 350w or so. Maybe 400w, to be on the safe side.

I currently have a geforec 9500 gt not sure on the ram size though. Anyone recommend a card for the region of 50-60 I should get?

edit it has 256 gddr3 memory.... this does not sound very good to me...

That looks like a good deal. I need to find out what power supply my pc has got. I think it's only about 110v though. I'll read through the Dell thread I bought my pc from and see if I can find out. If my pc can supply the power, I'll go for it. I think I've initially went for the 7600GT because it's a low power demand card.

EDIT: I actually ordered the 7600GT because it was recommended to me in ]this thread.

I've now cancelled my order for the 7600GT.

I've got the 8500GT, is the 7600GT better or not?

£38 for a 3-4 year old card is way too much.

The 7600GT is much faster than the 8500GT

The 7600GT and the 8600GT are very similar speeds ( the 7600GT if very slightly faster on most tests - but the 8600GT is better for video decoding)

A useful chart for comparing speeds is:

You can buy Geforce 9600gt 512mb (£40) + 500w PSU (look novatech is seling them for £16)
...and you can play mass effect 2 ( on high/customize)- ( even if is over you budget what the point spent less and play games on minimum??)

At the moment best budget option for shure is Geforce GTS 250 (£ 75)( its new version of Geforce 9800GTX ! ) witch allow you to play games on max settings for now

Im playing new Medal of Honor (beta) on max , and battlefield bad company 2 on max ass well ( no lags at all)

So windhoek if you can spend £90 ( GPU £75 +PSU £16 ) thats best for You, and you gonna be more than happy

Quite important is how much memory ram You have as well

Yeah man, too shame for a GeForce8 Series card.
even the very over priced 8600GTS can't keep up with the 7950GT.
the 8500 really sucks!

8600 GT: 32 stream processors, 540 MHz core, 700 MHz mem
8500 GT: 16 stream processors, 450 MHz core, 400 MHz mem

8500 GT = YUCK!

With those dismal specs, it'll probably perform like the X1600 PRO...

I wonder what corner, or which deep dark cellar, they had to look in to find the box containing these cards, There around 5 years old and unless you have a very very old PC that cant use anything else, then imo give this a miss. I appreciate its not the most expensive card to buy, but i dont see the point in buying something that has long since had its day.

What kind of PSU did you have in mind?

Maybe I'd be better off spending a few £100 on a new computer rather than upgrading my PSU and graphics card.

Do both. Your current motherboard supports modern cards, so get the graphics card and PSU now. Then if you do need to build a new PC, you only need to buy CPU/RAM/motherboard.

Get a 21st century graphics card please.

I just ordered a Sapphire HD 4670 from Amazon. Hopefully that'll do the job and I can play Mass Effect and more.
