nice card save £5-£10 compared to ebuyer and overclockers good reviews and the exact card i was going to buy hot! and thanks.

I'd pay an extra £10 and get the 1GB version - from all the reviews i've read it performs far better.

Hmm, you're right - can't get 1GB for less than £150.
A week ago you could get it from dabs for £155 - but the discount code (£10 off £150 spend) has now expired.
It might be worth waiting for them to issue a replacement as they seem to come quite regularly.

:edit:

Cheapest I can find atm is a 1GB Gainward GTX 460 from IT247, with discount code MYVAUT25 to get 2.5% off. This works out at £159.35 delivered.

Aparently the 1gb version is about ~10% faster, more noteably at very high resolutions.

Never used them myself, but the online reviews of them seem reasonable enough.

I wouldn't bother TBH. Differences are minimal and probably not noticeable. These babies overclock like mad anyway, with a small tweak a 768MB card will peform to 1GB levels.

can i ask why do people bother with this???
i mean 120 quid to play video games on your pc, with fiddly controls if you use the keyboard, why not just buy the console? there isnt much difference in price. i guess im not a pc gamer, never have been.

How relevant is card memory relative to performance? For example GTAIV estimates how much video memory is being used as you increase various detail settings.

On my 5850 (1gb) I was happy with settings utilising around 900mb but can push it further. I kept it at a slightly reduced level as I assumed that meeting/exceeding memory limits would start to drastically affect performance.

There is absolutely no comparison between some crappy PS3 or 360 port and a top of the line PC game. Absolutely none whatsoever and even a mid range card like this will destroy anything the consoles can come up with in both looks and performance.

The ultimate games machine is and always has been the PC.

True 1080p (or higher) gaming, framerates, graphic quality, load times, modding.
Prefer mouse and keyboard myself, but do use a wireless 360 pad for certain games and emulators (MAME, Dolphin etc.)

Happy to agree that consoles are great value and have some superb exclusives but I rarely use mine these days.

Can of worms.

While PC games undoubtedly look a lot better for the most part, that's not to say they always play better.

Then again, this is invariably because more and more games seem to be developed for console platforms and PC versions almost an after-thought (looking at you, GTA4 ... ).

If I could justify the 18 monthly updates for my GPU, I'd still game on my PC, but it's pricey to maintain the highest levels of quality. It's also apparent that developers are preferential to consoles on the face of things, as there is seemingly more money to make, due to sheer volumes.

I'm not going to say one is better than the other, as both have relative merits that the other simply cannot match.

Very very tempted!!! I really am not much of a single player gamer so is it a retail of just Cause 2 that could be sold?

Adding to what jumping jawa was suggesting, buy something extra that you might find useful rather than junk:

The quantity of memory is not the only difference.
The 1GB card has a 256bit memory bus, the 768MB has only a 192bit bus - as they both operate at the same bus speed, that's 33% greater memory bandwidth.

However, given the drop in prices of the 768MB version in the last 24 hours I too would be inclined to buy this over the 1GB version, which doesn't seem to have experienced the same price drop - yet.

Can anyone confirm that this can run 2 displays at the same time as I just bought a bluray drive for my pc and my tv is in a different room from my pc so I use a hdmi cable and also is it the standard hdmi or is it a mini hdmi socket on the back as I noticed other brands only do the mini hdmi

Fiddly controls on a keyboard? You ever played an FPS? Keyboard and mouse will bury a joypad everytime. PC gaming is a far superior experience IMHO. Btw I own a PS3 / Wii / 360 but only buy games for them I can't get on the PC - Guitar Hero etc.

This is slightly misleading. If you buy an £80 graphics card now, you'll have gaming that always looks superior to Xbox360 and Playstation 3, you MAY need to turn down some settings in some new games (this new DX11 gen) but it will still look better than console - plus you get to use mouse and keyboard, which can be a scary step for someone new to PC gaming

If you consider the graphics in games, there really is no need to upgrade every 18 months. Crysis is still the best looking and pretty much the most demanding game - it came out about 32 months ago. Anything that could play Crysis at relatively high settings back then should be doing pretty well right now.

Console's are toys. PC's are for real gamers. ;).

True, to an extent. A reasonable GPU now will always visually be better than that of a console at the same time; but PC gamers are far too obsessed with graphics alone, which is a shame.

Stating consoles are toys and PC's are for real gamers, is simply adding fuel to the fire and is your opinion, rather than salient fact.

I have both and love both to bits. To describe one as being for "real gamers" might be amusing on the internet forums, but say that in the office at work and you have a sure fire way of making sure people avoid talking to you, as computer games are all by definition, a toy to a degree.

Why people can't just be happy with their own toys is the million pound question. We'll always be guilty on the whole as humans, of being jealous and derogatory towards the next person's toys - even when there's no logic.

Summary: fanboys are absurd.

lol.
You sound like a lot of fun.
Obviously that's my opinion, I didn't state it was a fact. The wink at the end should of conveyed the informal nature of my post.
To qualify my statement (opinion) - If you're a purist, a gaming-enthusiast, you'll be wanting the platform that provides the best gaming experience: which (most of the time) is the PC.

Anyway, regardless of whether PC Gamers are far too obsessed (sweeping statement much?) with obtaining massive FPS or the top graphics available, you can game on the PC cheaper than on a console - in much better quality.

There are a handful of valid reasons for having a console though; PS3 blu-ray player, single-platform games, avoiding the bugs that can creep up in PC's, etc.

Look at almost any PC versus Console "discussion" (note: argument/flame war) and the first thing flung around by PC gaming fans is graphics. That to me, signals the priority of gaming. Enter into informal discussions with friends etc, and even console gamers talk firstly of graphics and how a game looks, before how it plays.

Conversely, the graphics argument does get thrown around by console owners too - but only when PS3 v 360 debates appear, or the even more stereotypical Everything v Wii debates!

Far too easy to overlook gameplay on a game that's not "outstanding" on the graphics front these days and developers don't get credit for great games that only look good visually. So year after year, we'll get soulless drivel that looks great and plays averagely. Looking at just about any of the EA Sports franchises right here.

I mentioned before that both consoles and PC's have their relative merits and I'll stick to that statement.

My personal experience is that PC gaming for hardware is generally more expensive (though more versatile), while console games are by in large a rip-off. For the price of a console, you can build an equivalent powered PC (well, just about), but doesn't represent good value in terms of parts.

You can trade/sell on console games with generally no fuss (unless EA gets their way with limiting use of online functionality after trades), while PC games use keys and are harder to sell on (for example, on the highstreet in places like CEX - PC games are a small proportion).

PC gaming generally stipulates sitting at a desk for KB+Mouse gaming, while consoles generally mean sitting anywhere.

You could go on, but I generally don't entertain the idea of these discussions unless people are willing to be objective about things. Instead, most tend to fit right into one of the gaming stereotypes like a glove!

Looking for some serious help here. How does this card compare to radeon hd 5850?

Just how much more powerful is the 5850 to this card?

It's better. Insignificantly in some games, significantly in others. The value is in the 460 atm, given how much cheaper it is.
