NEED it? Hardly, unless you are gaming. And they've not listed it as a gaming device as far as I can see. Had one for a few years and our controller is still in the box.

Nah ain’t got time for that. Do you work for Curry’s or Nvidia??

No, it's not - goodness me.

I have THREE of these and NOT ONE OF THEM is used for streaming or playing games.

What it is is the best media streamer money can buy.

Try streaming a full size 4K movie with HDR and Dolby Atmos passed through on your £30 Android box!

I tend to agree. I find the remote unusable and crap and use the controller instead for navigation and playback

On the Currys website (not eBay) all the Nvidia shields are shown under "gaming consoles"

The general consensus seems to be that if you are not using it for gaming (as well as media/streaming) then save some money and get a fire stick or similar.

This is irrelevant.
I've had a shield for 3 years and Controller is not required even with geforce now. the support for other controllers works fine.

The shield is not just for gaming, try and get a fire stick to bitstream Dolby atmos from a nas!

The general consensus is that the Nvidia shield is pretty much the best box out there for video AND gaming. It’s been out for 3 years and nothing has come to market that is even close to what this box can do all round. It’s so good even the Nintendo switch is based off the same hardware (albeit slightly modified)

Or get a Fire Stick to output 24p.
Funnily enough I don’t think I have ever even tried any of the gaming features. I use the remote rather than the control and have never had any issues with it.

Obviously I use it for more than that I was just giving to examples that don't need the controller
Spend £100 less and get a Android box from China

Ive got an m8s pro L and it struggles playing 4k HDR just buffers over local network. Tried wired and wireless!!
Its also a hassle but not impossible to put libreelec on (no reset switch) which slightly improves playback but I loose android TV and I'm also getting fed up with tinkering with these cheap android boxes so they play better as had a few.
So forked out for one of these to try, got it without the game controller as read its flaky so if I do game then will use my Xbox controller!
Just hope its as good as they say ha ha
These work very well as a Plex Server as well as a Plex Client. A very cost effective solution for hosting Plex. Also, plug in a USB TV tuner and a USB drive and you have Plex Live TV with recording. Had mine a few years and it just gets better and better. Ours is in our bedroom. Works with Google Home too.
Just to add.

I have one of these.

I have two official Nvidia Shield controllers.

I use old Xbox 360 pads with my Shield TV instead.

Why?

The Shield controller is pretty horrible tbh. Like holding a brick. Not sure many hardened gamers would choose it over and above any other old usable pads they might already have lying about.

Great. Actually bought this last week for the same price off of eBay. I have bought it for gaming. But didn't care about the controller as I have an xbox one and ps4 controller I can use with it.

Sorry this has probably already been asked/answered, but can you plug in a Xbox 360/one controller and use that instead of Nvidia's controller?
I got the shield with remote and controller for £123.41 off Amazon with the amex voucher thing on Thursday. It works way better than any of the £30 streaming boxes I've had. Plus u can side load anything u want on it, plan on adding a bunch of emulators! Well worth it
If your not bothered about one 2nd hand, I bagged one last night (2017 version) with controller for £79 on cash generator!
Absolutely A1 + Device if you want to use the Nvidia functions so Geoforce Now etc or as a Plex server which is an amazing feature.

However if you want this for streaming only then it isn't worth the extra other other devices such as Mi Box or 4K fire box/ stick from Amazon.

Also for those suggesting the cheap android type boxes - Don't bother. Awful awful things no HD Netflix (SD 480p - No thanks) , no UK catch up apps and you will never get any updates etc - total waste of money when the fire stick 4k is £35.

Everyone misses a feature the new controller has (The Gen 1 version doesn't have this). If you like the Google home intergration the controller has an always on far field mic for those google home commands, on the previous version you have to press the shield button before speaking (same with the remote on both versions). You obviously also don't get this using a different controller.

For me personally that is the biggest reason NOT to use the controller.
Despite getting mine 2 weeks ago I have not set it up yet. Its going to be used for emulation as well as streaming. Before anyone says raspberry pi then try playing N64 titles. Despite this tech being 3 years old and only a cosmetic redesign its still the fastest android box on the market. I would not expect cheaper android boxes to last long after intensive gaming. If no one is gaming then cheap amlogic or rockchip boxes can be had from banggood, aliexpress or gearbest. For the cost of this vs a higher end android box like an H96 Pro or mi 3 tv at £90 I know what I would pick.

To summarise

Gaming and streaming get the shield albeit get it with the controller.

Streaming and occasional gaming go for an H96 or a Mi Tv box

Streaming only the choice is vast just dont get anything thats less than 2mb ram. The best deal which ends today is the new firestick 4k at £35, great remote and easy to install other streaming apps.
Buy cheap pay 5 times..I've had umpteen Chinese boxes and they've all been crap. The shield plays everything you throw at it and I was happy to pay £130 for it.

I've read somewhere that this box cant stream the new 4K HDR content being trialled by the BBC through the iPlayer?
