NVIDIA SHIELD Console £166 @ Amazon US

A number of purchasers report getting a refund on import fees. So price above may be £30+ cheaper. This unit is likely to cost more when launched in Europe. Stuff from the states tend to be cheaper. I imagine Amazon.com may put a stop to this and restrict purchases to USA. Get it cheap while you can.

Price is the converted cost from dollar to pound. Price includes delivery and import fees. (Revised cost 16/07/15)

Ordered 8th June recieved yesterday 19th June.

Notes: Item comes with USA charging plate but power pack is suitable for UK. If you have a Shield UK tablet you can slide your plate onto this device it works. Shield tablet works with any micro usb tablet charger.

Offers I was able to claim:

3 Months Now TV entertainment
1 Google Play Movie Rental
90 Days of Unlimited Google Play Music Free (£9.99 unless your cancel)

I complained to Amazon.com that I had not received a $30 Google Play Credit via email. They provided $30 to spend on Amazon.com (if you have an american address you can buy digital downloads such as steam games sold by Amazon.com no extra import charges)

Also purchased the voice control separately well worth buying but if you have a Harmony remote you will not need it unless voice search is important to you as it is me. The free Nvidia Shield Controller is worth £50 new I am selling mine and using a wired Xbox 360 controller if needed. Checked and both wired and wireless works. Wireless controller light flashes constantly though so stick with wired.

Plex has the best interface I have ever seen on any device and is fast and works with voice search. Netflix no voice search but is fast and is the newest interface. Casting iplayer and Now TV to the box works well and there are lots of controller games.

So if your inpatient like me its a good buy better than my Roku 3, Fire TV its a bit of a premium though, but not massive. It plays all local content on KODI too.

what about import charges from us to uk? add VAT and import charges, it isn't worth it.

what does this do that the below for £99 can't do over steam streaming?

It can do 4k netflix and youtube, stream games from a PC, play the majority of video, audio files and can play android controller games. Its also a google cast. Have a look at the reviews on Amazon.com from consumers who have bought. Most love this thing.

I've got the tablet, other than being able to play war thunder natively, can it really do much more?

good price tho if it includes tax and import

its a question of taste, I have a Nexus 9 tablet but I still use the box as while there are cross overs between shield tablet and shield console they more compliment each other than get in each others way. Check out some reviews and make your own mind up. First thing I said though was darn this is way better than fire TV!

Are the any disadvantages to ordering one of these from the US ie is there anything that won't work that will work on the UK version? Ta

I ordered one of these too last week (just been notified it's been shipped). As I mentioned on the thread below, it'll make a great partner to the Panasonic ax630 4k models that there's been a few deals about on here recently (I picked up the 55" inch model brand new from Currys with 5yr guarantee for £779 earlier today, trading in an old portable I had in the loft).

I'm looking forward to Netflix 4k, running MAME and old console games, using Kodi on it (therefore replacing my old media-centre PC) as well as freeing up my Chromecast for use on another telly.

There shouldn't be, Android TV isn't regional locked in any way. As OP says, the included power pack will run on 230V fine, I'm just picking up another £1 shaver adapter to plug it in to a UK socket (I know you can plug in to a UK socket without, but I prefer the protection of a fuse).

16GB storage, is that much of a limitation?

I love it and wanted one as i needed a new media streamer and this will do the job perfect and with my 970 i can stream games from my PC instead of using my Nuc, think i will order one.

Thanks

You can add upto 128gb MicroSD card I bought a 32gb and all data is transfered to the card you just change it in settings. The EVO card I bought has good transfer rates and I have noticed a slow down. Also bought a 2gb usb 3.0 external hardrive it was £50 and hotukdeal. Its cheaper to buy these than the 500gb version which is $100 plus extra import tax. I think think I have 30 controller games on this and other apps.

The adapter supplied is clearly meant for all regions I could give you the loads but I assure you it is suitable for UK. If you get your hands on a Shield Tablet or rather the shield tablet charger, you can slip the plate of the USB charger and slip this UK plate on to the American device. It fits like a glove. I only became aware of this after I messaged Nvidia online services and they said if you had a UK Shield tablet the plates are interchangeable.

So other than 4k Netflix, nothing then?

could someone explain to me what the actual hell this does?
And as I have a gaming capable pc and a Ps4 would I need one? (I have a compulsive tech buying habit, majority of It I don't need & use!)

Would this be a better emulation centre than my Wii U? I like the Wii U as I can emulate my old Gamecube discs...

How do u get the offers from Android TV?

I'm thinking of it as a combination of devices, it performs the same job as a chromecast (but has wired ethernet), it can stream games from your gaming PC to a TV which I'm pretty sure your PS4 can't do, it is itself a pretty capable media PC so plex and whatever else will run on it nicely avoiding the need for a tablet + chromecast, finally it has a beefy GPU for an android device so all of the games on android should be open to you, things like half life 2 + episodes, portal, oddworld strangers wrath, GTA San Andreas, most gameloft games (struggling to think of graphically intensive games that aren't ports).

Personally, I'm looking at it and thinking I can use it to reduce the cabling sprawl or at least confine it. I have a chromecast, laptop, and DAC wired up to the mains and my TV. The chromecast needs power so that's one cable, laptop needs two, DAC needs one cable one spdif cable. This box can do the chromecast job better (shouldn't stutter slightly), it can stream and handle media like the laptop, and it can output to the DAC over USB so suddenly 5 cables become 3.

Looks good but saving for VR

I do think it can be useful device but 299 for 500gb? xbox one costs 349 and can do sooo much more. I don't get it. Why would you buy this? Even at 199 I think it's crazy

Xbox One :)? Apples & Oranges. Or rather apples & some bizarre fruit on a planet in the Perseus cluster.

Its a bit like a swiss arm knife it does allot and well. Hooking my 2tb external hard drive up to my bt home hub 5 so I can hook kodi up to it and still keep plex server on a pc for when I am away. Plex media server and kodi linked into the same box, very nice for your local content. Kodi can do wake on lan packages too if you want to keep your media on a PC plex server so you don't have to keep your pc on all the time. Android game play on this surprisingly good, streaming games from a PC is good but this only works with games optimized by Nvidia. The list is extensive and covers AAA titles. 4K netflix, 4K youtube, music services, on demand the list goes on. Plus you can cast to it.

when is this available to buy out of the uk?

Based on what I have read at least 6 months. Price buying it now compared to later is likely negligible even with the import costs. The only downside is the USA charger plate but as mentioned if you buy a Shield Tablet charger the plate can be moved from one to the other.

I saw this and was intrigued..... But after watching the 1minute amazon video it just looks like an expensive android box that plays apps like most dongles and smart tvs do for £20 and then just some android games????
Not knocking it but cant see how that justifies the price?????? "/

Any word on when 256/512GB micro SD variants come out?

Massively overpriced IMO. Steam streaming much better than the Nvidia streaming as it's not proprietary, will work with any GPU and supports a lot more games.

I think 256gb is out just expensive

This is a very good price actually, sounds like a good piece of kit for people who doesnt want a to spend on an expensive gaming PC nor a console
