Getting rid of old stock as a announcement is coming soon?

That's what I was hoping for...

It is a great piece of kit whatever the reason

Don't wait. This will chew through everything you throw at it, 4k, HDR, atmos, you name it. Best piece of kit i've purchased in years. New version will just have slightly updated Tegra and not much more.

Save your money and get 3 x 4KFS...
shield is 1 if not the top for playing iptv as well as other stuff, 4kfs is not on the same level

Slightly faster processor, smaller and cheaper manufacturing process (which could mean cheaper product... or higher profit margin) are the most consistent rumours.

I'd imagine a redesigned remote would be likely as well, given a lot of people having a gripe with the current one.
£2.49 saving. I'm buying it right now

I sure hope so. The shield TV definitely needs a refresh since it first launched. Shield Tablet could also do with new version.

I have a 4k fire stick in the kitchen and it's fine for what it needs to do and at it's price point but the sheild is in the living room plugged into an sony android tv and is so much more capable than the 4k fire stick. I only ever use the android tv features when I can't be arsed to get up and get the sheild remote.
Also for anyone considering the controller package that might already have PS3, PS4 or the newer bluetooth xbox one controller, these all work perfectly well with the sheild. Me and my 4 year old son have had many hours enjoying the free lego movie game that came with the sheild.

Great box got one myself best thing I ever did put an end to all the cheap chinese android boxes I purchased over the years.
1. It really sucks that they removed the IR sensor, as I find my OG Shield is far less responsive to bluetooth commands (pretty sure I read that someone had the opposite experience though).

2. Does anyone know how to use the IR commands via a Harmony Hub? It's soo sloooow.

3. I'm happy that this is (the?) one time that I'm not being punished for early adoption - mine cost £100 from amazon

For me it was not, samsung smart TV did just fine. Did not work great streaming pc from other room either. Ended up selling it and using a steam link. I was having input lag and my player randomly spinning around. Apparently something to do with either the weak Bluetooth chip or a firmware update.
Worth it for Nvidia geforce alone. I'm playing steam games at 4k ultra settings using their super computer in the clouds. No need for an expensive pc. Awesome.
It's pretty much confirmed now that there will be a new Shield released this year, and with Google Stadia coming out this year also it seems sensible to imagine the new model will support it. Unless you are desperate for one now I would 100% wait until Black Friday and "hopefully" both the new Shield and Stadia will coincide with this and we can get a good deal. Knowing Amazon though they will crank the initial price up just so they can lower it Black Friday to make it look like it's a better deal than it is.
Was just about to buy, but this has been out for 2 years, so I'm holding out for a new release. Will def buy a new version though. Didn't know it was a console for playing Steam games plus so much more

No hdr on YouTube, no Dolby vision, their update QA is shoddy... unfortunately it's still pretty much the best available option and I do like mine.
It’s just a 2% drop people 🎃
Bought for £148.51 with nvidia xbox style game controller included from amazon 12 months ago...feeling smug

Built in? Isn't the whole point of Stadia for it not to be built in?

Stadia will require a controller and a Chromecast plugged into your TV, so 2 pieces of hardware. Using the Shield with a controller is also 2 pieces of hardware.

Latest news I've seen indicated the new Shield model will be released next year. Considering Stadia Founder's Edition is the only one planned for launch in 2019, with the Pro and Base scheduled for 2020, I would be surprised if the Shield supports Stadia before the end of this year.

That's good information. I would still say if you don't immediately need one, then the smart thing to do would be to wait until November and pick one up in the Black Friday deals. Hopefully the Black Friday deal will be more competitive to entice people to buy the existing model ahead of next year's release of the new model.

Thanks for confirming, Martyn. Now to decide whether to get the updated shield when it’s released or wait for the PS5....

Got any recommendations for games that work particularly well? It seems to be important to consider which games are supported on geforce and which games have proper controller support. Doom and MGS5 for example plays particularly well in both regards.

Rumours the new one will have Google Stadia built in

Can’t see it, it will competes with there own GeForce now, sideload yes but not built in
Great bit of kit, get's used everyday in our house!

There's plenty of free games available such as tomb raider, & the batman arkham games which showcase the Nvidia games app really well. I've bought a few cheap games off steam which are not gforce ready but they still work. you have to reinstall them everytime you okay though. Doesnt take long. I recently bought dirt 3 complete edition for 79p & call of Juarez for 99p. Im able to crank up the settings to ultra on every game & they work flawlessly. They look great for older games. The latest doom is the best showcase for the app. I've even tried a few if the free android games available & they look great with high settings. They must have a extremely decent computer & servers in the background.
I have a PS4, which I love..but I'm using my Nvidia shield more than the PS4. Was waiting for metro exodus to come down on the PS4, but now I'm going to wait for the steam version as I know it will look & play much better on the Nvidia app.
I think it was pretty underhand of nVidia to remove the IR port on the revised Shield TV.

Controller support seems good to me. Better on the gforce titles but still decent on the steam only games.
Downside of the new Nvidia shield is the controllers

You cant beat the original shield controllers

I use the shield controller with mine. Works well. Sometimes I use the PS4 pad. Xbox one will work well with steam.
This is probably the best gadget purchase I've made.
Yes - there's a risk of a newer model coming out in next 12 months.
Yes - the price will almost certainly be lower on Black Friday.
It's still worth picking up today at £157.

Happy SHIELD owner since 2016 (paid £99 then, but reckon it's worth at least £299).
Like many I had tried all sorts of different media devices over the years: Android boxes, Roku, Chromecast, Amazon sticks, Raspberry Pis - but this device does it all. KODI, Plex server/client, emulation, YouTube, Amazon Prime, Netflix, Channels (+ HDHomeRun box) etc.
Yes the device is old, but yes it is still the best by quite a distance, bought 2 of these in last year's black Friday deals and are amazing.

If you know what you are doing with these then they are so useful and are simple to use and setup.

Potentially yes... it depends whether Google release the Stadia app for the existing Shield models, or restrict it to the newer model(s); though I am certain the current hardware is capable

Hard to say... you certainly raise a good point; however, the economics might be better from selling hardware that supports both... Nvidia supporting G-Sync on Freesync monitors comes to mind, and Chromecast supporting Amazon Prime.

Not quite everything. It won't do Dolby Vision.
Its still a cracking bit of kit, but to persuade myself I'm not missing out I supplemented mine with a 4K Fire Stick and I'll be honest, despite my love of how slick the Shield is to use I tend to go with the Fire Stick for basic day to day streaming.
migavupe10/09/2019 22:52

May as well spend the extra and get the controller.

The controller isn't great. Get the basic one and buy an X-Box controller.

Side note, if anyone has come across away of calibrating the Shield controller to prevent a constant stick input (that goes beyond unpairing and re-pairing) I'm all ears.
