O2 Data bolt ons - You might be able to get 500mb free

I have no idea how relevant this will be to some people.

I'm on a 24 month contract and noticed it'd crept up in price. So I wandered over to "my o2" and saw it was because the data bolt on has gone up in price to £5.11.

Since I never use it anyway. I thought I'd try to remove it.

I went into "manage bolt ons" and clicked "swap" against my "500MB UK Data for Smartphone " . Imagine my surprise when I saw a bolt on for "500MB UK Data" which is free! Needless to say I have applied said swap, which is now pending.

I'm not sure what the differences are between the two, and if this ends up being a bum deal due to someone more knowledgable being able to point out any flaws then fair enough.

But if not, hey it's worth checking your account to see if you can save a fiver, if like me you were paying for the data as an extra.

Or if you don't currently have data, check to see if you can get this free one? Go forth and investigate!

If it's no good can someone tell me why so I can be sure I should expire?

You are a genius, just done this on my account and its due to be changed on the 7th November so 3 days time! Nice saving of £5.11 per month or £60+ for the remainder of the contract!

I have just noticed its let me alter the tariff too so now I have just saved another fiver!

This really needs to be hotter so people notice. Very sly O2, very sly indeed.....

hmm...must not work with newer packages

my data bolt on called the All Rounder, which is £6 and includes 500mb, but can only be swapped for the basics or the works, none of which are free

still, it might work for some people, so have some heat OP!

Mines about midway into a 24 month contract.

Looked at my OH's package and no option to add free data but there was no data to start with on hers.

nutta

same ere

same here as well, but I will check each month to see if anything is available.

Hot for those that can get it

Thanks, I was paying for unlimited data, but 500MB is more than enough for me!

Checked mine and its 3 days from the end of the billing cycle and used less than 40mb

I'm 18 months into a 24 month contract and can't change my unlimited data for anything other than 100mb a day at a cost of £1.02 a day so no go for me but hot for those it's helped..

I'm only 10 months into my 24 month contract and I was able to swap "750MB UK Data for Smartphone" for "750MB UK Data"
Previously paying £5.11 and now not paying a thing.

my daughter was charged £177 for last month's O2 bill - I am going to get her to look at her account on line & see if there is any way in God's name she can get her bill down!

Thanks have just changed my sons 750mb data charge for smartphone which was costing him £5.11 over to 7500mb free data,

Also seems to work on a 18 month contract which is what he is on.

I wonder, if you don't currently have data on your package, what if you were to add the 500mb data plan then remove it, would you then be getting it free of charge?
Sounds to me like it could work but I'm not sure.

Very doubtful unless you buy your contract out.

I get this.. what do I do?

Yes, this doesn't work for new contracts where the data bundle is referred to as 'The All Rounder' etc...

Nothing you can do.

Nice find, way better than the free 0.5 MB i get with o2, unfortunately i cannot change using the above method as i am on a business deal.

this will not work on any q111 tariffs as o2 overhauled their data plans at the start of the year, only available for q410 tariffs and older

Flintstone, how did you manage this. I'm on Simplicity 300 mins talk, load of txts for £10.21 pm. Asked O2 yesterday about upgrading, but only offered what was already online. I have an old mobile, no touchscreen, so am looking to get new phone as well.

i had something similar -but not the same. my partner had a contract with 02, he'd changed mid contract from vivaz to blackberry and needed to bbm bolt on and internet. he was charged 32 quid per month whereas i had ultd internet, bbm and 300 txts... for 25 p/m much better deal than his. long and short, we went on to manage account and got his down to 21 quid!! for a better or similar package to his! ha.. 02 actually let us 'downgrade' to a cheaper payment. result for us. funny on their behalf. no complaints though!

Doesn't seem to work on iPhone tariff

Hi d1gger,

I was chatting to them online as the BB Bolt-on was no longer available, asked them if they could put it on, they mentioned changing to another contract, told them I wasn't happy and could I have my PAC code.

the O2 guy put me thru to customer services for the PAC code who asked me why I was leaving so I told them I wasnt happy with the change and having to pay more to obtain less, the guy then said he could give me the same calls/txt for £10.50 and the bolt-on for £6 (500MB), I was happy since it was a BB bolt-on and the Tesco's isnt. Had to give it 24 hours to kick in but its there now.

BTW I was gonna change to the Tesco as it wouldnt have bothered me much for the email side.

and now i'm tied in for 12 months again, but not too bothered about that

Don't seem to work on a new contract but have the heat for spotting brilliant find!

Doesn't work for our contracts but good find!

Hmm - I'm on an old unlimited data package. Wonder if this will work and whether I want to drop from unlimited to 500mb (I've used over 800Mb some months)..

any one know if it works for business customers?

yes got it

not worked for me, but very kind of you to share your find as it worked for some!

I'm so annoyed with O2, having to pay for 300 minutes when I never use more than 30 and cannot have web unless I pay extra for it!

the reason I'm still with them is because I get £5 off their home broadband which works very well, it's reliable and I'm on it all the time
