2k source and streaming does not come close to seeing the same thing on disc. You want a real 4k experience try Dunkirk on disc. Absolutely stunning.

Agreed. But until they at least halve the prices of 4K discs I don’t knock anyone getting streamed versions.

Well as with all these things demand reduces the price. So if no one buys them they will not drop in price. Same thing has happened with every new format. My first dvd ( Gladiator) cost me £36.
Heat added. Vincent from hdtv test put up a video on YouTube showing the differences between a 4k disc and a stream on Apple 4k tv.

There is a difference but it’s extremely slight and certainly not worth paying £20 over a £5 stream.

What film are they comparing? Are they both a true 4k source?
Marginal difference between disc and stream and a great comparison video for those interested. Ive always been a disc is better person plus a android phone user. But this has really swayed me.

As he points out, at normal viewing distances you are not going to miss out on much if you chose to save cash and stream.

Even Dunkirk, the disc is £25 and 4k stream is £13.99 on itunes. The difference is not going to be almost twice as good.

Alot of these 4k discs are from 2k sources anyway so what are you paying extra for?

Dunkirk is true 4k filmed for Imax and the visual effects were finished in 4k as well. I watch 4k streaming for TV and things not from a 4k source but for films such as Interstellar, Blade Runner or Close Encounters I will stick to the disc. Probably not worth upgrading for Notting Hill of course though.

Streaming will be compressed.

Also no Atmos with streaming. So lower bitrate picture coupled with inferior sound, definitive experience for sure

Dunkirk is a great movie. Odd reason why they neglected an atmos soundtrack for it. Would have sounded amazing.

Plus, if you are already an iTunes user Apple upgrade your old hd movies to 4K for free if they have that version on their store. Unfortunately I just got iTunes now when I moved from android to iPhone, so most of my digital library is on Google Play!

I have to question that last part, how could you have paid £36 for a DVD version of Gladiator in late 2000, early 2001, when it was less than £20 in the UK, and the imported version from DVD Empire etc. R1 were selling for £13-16.

Jesus Christ when did the delivery become so very much more important than the content ?
WGAF. IF the film is crap you are still. watching a crap film ?
If I watched the film, if it was up to Bluray ( or DVD in some cases) I see absolutely no reason to watch it again for the "sesnsation" of the pixels......

I still only have a 1080i Panny TV, because it ain't broke don't fix it.
When it actually breaks I will rush to get another, but until then..........probably being going strong some 7 years now.
(Wouldn't get a Samsung note, as my dads remote on his gave up after something like 2 years).

No wonder I have all this spare cash for other stuff not related to television pixels.

Where did you find the price for that? It was the double disc edition at PC world and it cost me £36.
4k discs are a niche item and prices are kept artificially high. For example, The Shallows 4k disc is £20. I can pick up the 1080p Blu-ray for £1 from Poundland which gives me the digital copy that will be 4k on iTunes via the Movies Anywhere service.

Find the price? I had DVD's from 1997 onwards, and by November 2000 the format was well established, and players were around for less than £120. The only thing special about Gladiator in the UK region 2 release was the fact it was the first DTS title available for region 2 only players. If you paid £36, then for some reason PC World had it price at least 50% higher than everywhere else in the UK. DVD prices had started to settle down in price by late 2000, as by that time it was a well established format, and as such the prices for the discs had reduced significantly compared to 1998-99.

Yes, all I said was in that case PC World had it at least 50% more expensive than everywhere else. It's not like you could come on HUKD to find the best price in those days, so getting ripped off was obviously more common than now.

Yes. Use a vpn and sorted. You need a us iTunes account on a laptop or something to upload your uv movies to 4K iTunes. I wouldn’t use a iOS device to do that as it regions locks ur account for 90 days. Apple TV doesn’t have this restriction so you can switch between uk and us depending where ur movie is.

Also you are not taking into consideration availability or where i lived? Now it is easy to get things cheap but if you lived in a very small town then you had to pay what was available and back then PC world and Currys were very very expensive.

got to agree, one of the few SciFi films that actually has a story line a 5yr old can't punch holes thru unlike live die repeat where the obvious combination of two of the time bending creatures would negate every action in the film lol

Yes, because back during the dot-com era of the early 2000's there was no place to go online and buy DVD's, was there?

Oh, no hang on, there were tons, Play247.com (later just becoming play.com)being one of the biggest, cheapest and fastest for delivery, especially of newly released titles.

Oh, here is a link, £17.99 delivered. web.archive.org/web…=R1
iTunes has 10 movie collection for £10 right now of which Die Hard is 4k. Rest should upgrade soon.

Your entire statement was that, prices drop based on if they don't sell, and you then stated you paid the outrageous price of £36 for the DVD Gladiator, to make your statement look more credible. I called you out on the fact that the DVD was never that highly priced, unless you were fleeced, and DVD had become a well established format by that time, so prices had naturally dropped.

You forget you might have been buying your first DVD back in late 2000, early 2001, but some of us had a large collection by then, and may even have been involved in the sale and distribution of such items. So derail, no, actually it was showing that your statement was not true, even if you did actually pay the price you stated for the DVD at the time.

Have a nice Christmas, and thanks for the compliment.

Well I apologise then, since it was an honest mistake as I misread your statement, but stand by my original call out on the price being inflated. However, resorting to name calling is very childish and I believe against the policy of this site, you should be ashamed of yourself.
