Oh, how I craved one of these...
We miss you, Windows Phone... :/

Edited to add: Stil lthe best user interface on a mobile device to this day.

If only MS could have fixed the 'app gap' - their mobile OS was better than both iOS and Android IMO, but a smartphone you can't get any apps or updates for is dead end. MS decided to push their software (which is what they are and want to be) to the existing platforms rather than trying to compete with two very established players - even the venerable Symbian and BlackBerry OSes couldn't survive despite being around longer.

Why would anyone buy a windows smartphone now?
Not exactly "smart" any more. Microsoft App store is slowly shutting down.
You can find Lumia 950 on ebay for 50-60, refurbished. Same upcoming problem, but at least you'll get decent camera (in 2018 terms)

Do these still work or has support been dropped I'm confused ?
Can I flash iOS onto this?

Support was dropped December 2019, the platform is dead.
Waste of money

Cheers,

So getting one would be useless I guess
Follow Microsoft's advise

What should Windows 10 Mobile customers do now?
With the Windows 10 Mobile OS end of support, we recommend that customers move to a supported Android or iOS device.
I think the key word here is "Obsolete". Brave to post it, I suppose!

You would actually think Android might be a possibility for it. Looks a nice phone with decent specs, shame if nothing can be done with them.

Not deep enough - we still have to live with those silly tiles on the PC screens. And they are not even touch screens.

They tried. In Europe it was actually making inroads. The problem was that it didn't gain enough traction in the US, or to a lesser degree, China.
In Italy it was in 2nd behind Android at one time. In UK, a 3rd, close to Iphone.
I wondered that if windows phones were released at the same time as android, would it have been the phone operating system of choice...

Wouldnt have mattered on same release date, though microsoft following through and completing emulation of ios and android on them would have been the show stealer.
These were a great idea at the time, aimed squarely at the enterprise market and an optional Continuum dock was available in order to use the phone as a desktop when connected to a monitor.

Sadly released to late in Win Mobiles death throws and badly marketed.

Shame no Android Rom ever appeared for it.

Indeed. My Nokia N91 and E71's are still my favourites of all the phones I've owned.

Bought a Blu branded Windows phone years ago from Amazon for £50 (after Huawei G300 and Orange San Francisco android phones). Brilliant phone and interface.

Only sold it due to online banking apps no longer supported.

Oh Windows Phone...we hoped you were going to let Apple and Google know they weren't the only operating systems on the block. But you didn't. Fab hardware though

They did, the OS was superb, where it fell down was the app store was very bare, a company the size of Microsoft could have / should have subsidised the store to give it a leg up or incentivised developers etc but sadly they didn't and people started to leave. I had it as a Work Phone, still in the drawer somewhere.
Saw this a few days ago. Read several reviews. Looked like a lot of phone in its day but really for the business community. "No apps, rubbish camera and full of glitches (for some) and no dock" put me off even buying for the novelty value.
Have a read but dont get tempted uk.pcmag.com/sma…-x3
There's a modding community on Telegram 'W10M PC Mods' porting desktop apps, the Windows on Arm project to run a full desktop (work in progress), and recently TWRP has been made to run on a 950, 64bit X86 emulation is also being worked on and WSL now supports running GUI apps so there's still life left for those interested in following fan development, but in a limited capacity by die hard fans, which may or may not go anywhere but certainly interesting to follow progress.

It was a beautiful OS and the small team working on it were very enthusiastic. But, you're right, the gargantuan Microsoft didn't take it seriously and it died a death of app starvation. Some of the Nokia Lumia phones were soooo good. Still got a Lumia 1020. Dust it off sometimes but none of the apps work now. Then, of course, Microsoft bought out Nokia and killed it (almost) stone dead. I used to run a Windows Phone blog....that died a death too
