recommending an alternative for £260 more seems a stretch.

You mean the Rift S? Completely different things, Rift S requires a gaming PC to work. The Go is standalone and is best for media and simple games (the Quest is much better if you want a standalone gaming headset). Also the Go is only 3DOF (meaning it tracks rotation but not movement) and just comes with one simple controller.
Isn't this EOL now

Its not really an alternative as such.

The Oculus Go has some small time experiences and is cool for showing people some VR video but the Quest is a totally different thing. Its a full VR gaming headset with high resolution. Imagine the Go as one of those little tikes yellow and red cars and the quest as an Audi.

True. Go would be good for watching vr movies and that's about it nowadays.
Better off with your phone and a bobovr z5, would be more powerful and probably higher res if you have a good phone.

Got to agree there had a go on a friends quest recently and it was mind blowing, still think the price is too high but i am tight and also know how people pay a lot of money for a gaming console.
PS4 and Xbox days are numbered...
Great device had one since day one then traded up to the Quest from mine. However miss my go for the following reasons:
It’s amazing for watching media when away from home or even at home if the wife doesn’t like a tv making the room light daytime!
And it’s material head strap is more comfortable for this so it’s good to use your laying down where my quest is comfortable due to plastic strap.
Some good games and experiences on this thing which is what made me want to upgrade to the Quest!

The resolution on this is better than any smartphone vr.
This is the best device for portable vr media consumption - more comfortable and lighter than the quest. Notable downsides are poor black levels and short battery life. Some decent relaxation/mediation apps on it, plus some very fun games, despite being 3dof.

The S9 has the same resolution so in the Samsung vr you get the same? (I have these and a quest) And if you used a Sony phone you'd have a much higher resolution due to the screens being 4k so much less screen door effect.

Oculus go 2560x1600

Samsung galaxy s8 2960 x1600

And many other quadhd phones have similar resolution
This platform is pretty much dead - very few new apps. The price reduction suggests either end of line (as mentioned above) or a new model is coming this spring, two years since this device launched.

Bought mine a few months back £150 primarily for 180° 3D entertainment videos. After the initial wow factor of feeling I'm really there in amongst the action, you quickly adapt to it and the limitations such as low field of view and screen door effect becomes much more apparent.

You can make a vr headset simulator out of 2 toilet rolls (to limit fov) and some mesh (for screen door effect) and a rubber band (to hold it on your head)
Wear that while banging your girl in real life for a while, then it will seem normal

The clarity in vr also depends on the layout of subpixels (RGB stripe vs pentile) with the difference resulting in the extra sharpness on the Go over Galaxy phones.

You'll get extra sharpness on the Go over a Galaxy phone + Gear VR due to the subpixel layout. You'd have to use a cheap vr phone holder with a Sony phone which is a far inferior experience to using a Go - i doubt there are any available with Oculus quality level optics.
