I bought a Dell Vostro 200 after seeing it posted here about a year ago and its now time to upgrade. I was looking for some suitable memory and this was the cheapest I could find some 'brand' RAM.

Specs
Input voltage (V) 2.1
Internal memory (MB) 2048
Internal memory type DDR2-SDRAM
Form factor 240 Pin DIMM
Bus clock rate (MHz) 800
CAS latency 5-5-5-12
Memory layout (MB) 2 x 1024

Apologies for the camouflage finish.

NB Quidco is only on the exc VAT price (£14.90)

i can never tell which memory is suitable. i ran crucials memory checker and it says i need:
DDR2 PC2-5300 • CL=5 • Unbuffered • NON-ECC • DDR2-667 • 1.8V • 128Meg x 64 •

will this memory work?

hi, ok thanks, should i stay away from brands like ebuyers 'extra value' or 'crucial' and go for established names like corsair and kingston?

You can underclock 800MHz RAM in a 667MHz motherboard without problems.

Crucial, Kingston and OCZ are good ones to go for. Keep an eye on the buffered/unbuffered. Don't get the wrong one.

thanks, they have some pc2-5300 over at ebuyer, 2x1gb for £19.56 delivered

You're correct in that you can underclock ram...although call me an idiot … You're correct in that you can underclock ram...although call me an idiot but isn't PC6400 ram a different shape to PC5300 - so if he bought this it wouldn't fit?

PC5300 and PC6400 are the same shape

however

PC6400 and PC2 6400 are a different configuration fit

This is expensive you can get 2x2gb of OCZ DDR2 8500 for £45.74 delivered 1gb sticks today are 10 a penny everyone wants 2gb sticks any decent site will be able to better this play.com has 1x2gb stick of kingston for £17.99 or the same PNY branded at £15.99 and before someone mentions heat spreaders it doesn't make any difference if your not overclocking the ram massively.
play.com/PC/…nre

I bought a member of my family 2x2gb of the PNY for his vostro for Xmas and it worked great it saw the ram and has been fine since I'm not a fan of PNY myself but its from play has a decent warranty and if its just for a cheap vostro then why not. The op mentioned he has a vostro 200 i bought the daughter a vostro 200 ages ago just to surf the net and with the deal i had back then delivered it came in at £130 and as a builder myself had 4 sticks of ddr2 knocking around to put in which i did but after using some software to scan the motherboard to find out its specs i discovered that it was a foxconn P45 motherboard the exact same board they use for there quad systems and i knew that it supported DDR2 8500 even though it never mentioned it as P45 motherboards are very high spec.

Dell Vostro 200 can only handle 1GB in each slot.

But yeah, that Play RAM is cheaper...

Is a P45 the same as a Foxconn g33?

As I think my Vostro has one of these...

Need a 64bit OS for more than 3GB if memory serves (excuse the pun)

ABORT, ABORT!!!

This doesn't seem to work in my Vostro 200.

Pants.

hi, slightly old thread. regarding the 2gb sticks mentioned above, i have a dell dimension e521 and the documentation says i should install dimms in pairs. is there any technological reason for this?
