This is an Office 2016 key, not an Office 365 key, you do know the difference don't you?

I doubt it very much ... you may as well get a hooky copy for free.

Is this genuine?

It's a genuine scam unless you really believe that Office 2016 sells for £21 retail.
if its scam...how comes it works ok? wher do they get the keys from?

They're generated until Microsoft blacklists them

C'mon, what do you think? For starters Office 2016 Professional Plus is a corporate not a retail version of Office. Some sellers claim that they are recovered keys from obsolete hardware - it may be true, who knows?. Alternatively, they might be corporate keys that are licensed for multiple corporate pc's that are being sold on by unscrupulous sellers. If so, there is always a chance that Microsoft may decide to crack down on the practice and cancel the serials. This deal appears no different than other offers on ebay for a fiver so may as well save your cash. That's what i did six months ago and have had no problems so far.

Purchased one for £3.95 on eBay just now. The scammers act as though they're compliant by saying the sale comes with a broken motherboard that the COA was used with.

I'll be 'that person' who asks for the broken motherboard to be shipped and check with Microsoft that it is a genuine COA

I'll then ask Microsoft for a new product key because 'this one' is compromised = Legit key.

Which seller did you go through?
I've no experience of this version of Office but the W7 Corporate and Office 2007 Corporate and earlier versions used one key per license issued up to the number of users paid for (I hope that this makes sense, every user had the same key code) The result is that the corporate key 'could' be used for a theoretically infinite number of times as long as everybody wasn't on line at the same time.
Corporate versions previously had just one COA which was held in the company HQ and it's usually the operating system COA or sticker which is transferred with a motherboard and not the application (programs)

We all know that these sales are essentially pirate copies, you just have to play the seller at their own game.

I don't follow your logic. These ebay sellers get closed down all the time, many of them will reopen using different account details. Asking one of these guys to ship a broken motherboard is a waste of your time as well as theirs. Especially as you have already stated that you know what the true nature of the transaction actually is.

The seller uses a generator to provide serials for office, some might use the same volume licence key with multiple users.

By asking the seller for the Motherboard, which as you probably know they have to provide to comply with the sale on eBay, you get the COA key of the machine used with Office.

You can then ask Microsoft for a change of product key for Office since you believe the key is 'compromised'. Microsoft have always done this for me (even with Windows Keys).

As a by-product you gain a Windows Key and motherboard the seller has sent.

What did they quote you for shipping the mobo?

Nothing - the listing states 'Free shipping' and lower down the seller tries to state 'additional charge'.

Problem for the seller is that he/she can't list the key without the hardware (as per the eBay policy). If the shipping charge is stated as free, it doesn't matter what the listing states lower down. It's simply an effort to put people off asking for the motherboard, thus forcing the seller to complete a legitimate sale.

If the seller does not ship the board I get my money back and keep a the key already sent via Message.

The seller has updated my order with shipped. EST Arrival Saturday 19th. This now means I can open a case and get my money back if the items do not arrive.

I've asked the seller when I can expect the board - I'll update once I have an answer.

So, what happened with the seller and the mobo? Any joy? It seems that listing has ended and I'm struggling to see anyone else selling the code with a mobo that dont state charges for sending the mobo
