Found 2nd Jan 2009
got my oil and filter changed in ATS hemel hempstead for £49.99, on a vw/audi TDI PD engine for my seat car this is the price across the board and is good valuae even if you do normally do it yourself the oil is around £35 and the filter around £10 so for and extra £5 ish someone else can do it which on these cold days is not a bad idea
the vw/audi TDI pd engines need a different grade of oill from normall and i checked this out to be the right noe so good bargain to be had here hope this helps some out

this is not the case for all cars though. general castrol oil can be had for as little as £14.99 and filters as little as £5

£50 is not a good price for a lube IMO

Yeah good price for a VW PD diesel oil change, I normally do this myself but I'd happily pay an extra £10-£15 to avoid the hassle!

**** me I must be getting old!

£50 for an oil change is now a bargain! :w00t::w00t:

I expect they cut corners with this deal though (economise on punctuation for one thing :p)

£50 is good for some cars (VW's ect) due to the oil they use ( extra long life) i paid £49 at kwik fit as well for my Golf

+1. Bet they chuck the same oil in everything anyway

I expect they suck out the old oil rather then draining it!

i normally do it myelf asell but by the time iv jacked the car up and got under in this cold weather i would much rather pay someone else a little extra to do it

Kwik-Fit drain the old oil and they use some gunk stuff when they put the sump plug back in to stop it leaking and make it easier to remove next time. what's so special about tdi pd engines that they cost £50 my 2002 laguna 1.9 dci diesel was only £30 at Kwik-Fit, and my current MGZR
1.8 160 BHP petrol is the same.:santa:

It's a long life oil, as needed by many newer diesels, made more complicated if you gave a DPF/FAP (particulate filter). Your dci is quite picky too so be careful to avoid turbocharger failure.

I get my oil changes done at National Tyres for £22.50 (if booked online). That includes a new filter and they use Castrol Magnatec oil. There is no way that I could buy the stuff myself and dispose of the old oil for less.

not sure whats so special about it but VW reccomends you use oil graded 505.01 for these types of engine which i have bought mysefl before and when i checked it out with ats supplier it was that grade

same here! Wouldnt dream of paying more than £30 for an oil & filter change.

£50 is way over the top.
Sorry but this is cold.

Most modern european cars (VW, Merc, BMW, Vauxhall) use oil costing around £45 for 4 litres. A lot of Japanese models are now heading this way. Using the wrong spec oil will have serious consequences on the engine. Voted HOT

Just can't buy oil and filter for £30 for many cars now, let alone the labour.

The problem is, would you trust that the right oil would be used by ATS?

This is not a good deal as you can do it youself.

However my mk4 Golf is a pain because the undertray is so low and you actually need ramps to do it youself.

You can easily at Costco. What oil do ATS use?

Presumably the correct oil, but see my above comment regarding that as a dangerous assumption.

So I now have to start up a business and pay a membership fee to purchase oil do I? Go on, what do they sell Castrol Edge 0W-40 for? I could also use Elf Excellium.

The dont sell Castrol Edge but then imo that is a rip-off anyway. Especially for VW and Audis isnt it? Bet they rake it in from gullible people.

Most VW dealers just use normal oil when servicing cars, I've asked them.

No, Edge is not specific to VWs, it just meets some of VAG's specifications in the same way it meets other specifications from Ford, PAS, Renault/Nissan etc. You will find that the vast majority of sensible (not gullible) people follow their oil specifications - this is especially important on long life/variable life service intervals and for diesels with particulate filters.

I have a particulate filter, if I use the wrong oil it will damage the particulate filter and it will cost either hundreds to manually regenerate or approximately £1000 to replace. Hence I can only dream of £30 for oil and filter like many owners now.

Modern common rail and PD diesels are very sensitive to oils.

mccririck;7399995

No you haven't. VW dealers have to stock at least 4 different engine oils for servicing requirements.

Define what 'normal' oil is.... There is no such thing anymore. Its probably the most critical servicing component of your car. If you looked through a decent oil manufactures product listing you would be amazed at how many variations there are now. I'm not talking about the viscosity either (15w40 / 10w/50..etc) thats only just the beginning of getting the right oil for your car now. Branding is not the answer either, as an example.. Castrol Edge has seven different variations.
If you want to change it every 5-6000 miles then maybe you can compromise a little.
As servicing intervals have increased drastically in the last 10 years. Putting the right oil in your engine is essential at these prolonged intervals.

- sorry - went on a bit there:oops:

Have to agree molerat. Last time I bought Mobil1 for the Merc it was £45 per 4 ltrs. Seems expensive but when I rack up my 500,000 miles it will look cheap. Using cheap oil once per year is false economy.

all depends where you buy the oil from! You cant use halfords rip-off prices to compare.

put your car reg in here and see what oil is recommended and the price charged for filter & oil change.

I'd be intrigued to see what cars come out really expensive. My honda civic came bach with a quote of £26 incl labour (Catrol magnatec)

I don't think anybody has used Halford prices to compare.

I come out at £34 on the national website, however, it doesn't say anything about this including a filter apart from the original banner.

Unfortunately the oil they suggest is not sufficient for my car according to my handbook (I need an oil capable of the ACEA C3 spec, the Edge that they suggest doesn't meet it). I would have to look elsewhere or potentially void my warranty.

Repped that, thats a bloody good price!

Get my Vectra done at National, 0/30 Fully Synthetic Edge, think it was around £30 last time

oil used in vw/audi diesal engines is fully synthetic thats why it is so dear if that oil is not used the service interval will be shorter.

Oil used in most modern engines now has to be fully synthetic, certainly not just VAG engines!

Apologies for doubting you (was a bit full of the lager the other night). Looks like you did get a good deal. I have just been shafted so many times by garages that I am now a bit of a cynic (now always do my own servicing). I would pay a few quid more just for the satisfaction of knowing the job was a good one.
