Oil and Filter Change - From £22.50 @ National Tyres

This is either going to go hot very quickly or stone cold - one of those marmite deals....
But in these austere times I think its a cracker!

Blurb from website:

"Most car manufacturers recommend replacing your oil every 6,000 miles and at National we like to ensure you are receiving the highest quality oil to help keep your car engine in peak condition. An oil change is particularly important if you have long intervals between each service or your mileage is very high or low."

I just booked my BMW E46 3 Series in for a total cost (inc oil disposal) of £47.15. This includes 6 litres of Castrol Edge 5w30 and a Unipart filter.

I can't even buy the oil for that price!

I know some people will say that you get what you pay for and how can a tyre fitter be qualified to change oil... blah, blah, blah....

I intend to oversee the whole job to make sure no corners are cut, etc.

Labour charge is not included. I've rang mine local few days ago since, and oil change including labour charge is 10-20 quid on top.
Worth check with them.
I've changed oil myself, coz at least I know that oil I use is genuine.
Good value anyway, have some heat

Actually, I checked with my local depot.
The price you see on the website is the price you pay.
So for me, £47.15 for an oil and filter change is two-thirds of what I would pay to do it myself and I'm getting BMW approved Castrol oil.....?

No brainer really?!

If you book it online it's all in and same when I phoned last time - I'm betting whoever you called didn't want the job.

Anyway it's supposed to be 10% off for an online booking, but I got the same price as online last time I phoned them and then used this voucher for a further 10% off.

Only problem is that there is not a lot of choice - they offer you manuf. recommended oil even though high mileage cars would probably benefit from something a bit thicker. I'm my case my Sirion has to have (according to their system) a higher spec oil then my wifes 107 even though I know it's the same base Daihatsu engine in them both.

I have a diesel Ford Focus. It's showing on the site as £38.25. I priced up the oil and a filter at Halfords and it came to £41.98 so this looks like a real bargain and I won't even need to get my hands dirty!!

Total cost of basket = £40.30

for my Mazda RX8

Very Tempting

Looks good thanks

is it worth having the engine flushed?

Thankyou

One day it was £5.99 for a tin of duckhams 20/50 and £2 for a Unipart filter.then I blinked and £50 is a bargain.

Ok it works out lot cheaper for me, also my car is known for drinking oil (Mazda rotary engine). I have booked mine

Thanks a lot

Thanks, too tricky to do a Freelander myself.

That was one rather long blink.

That said their reg plate thing picks the wrong engine size for my car and quotes for less oil than it would need for either one.

Depends on the car/engine.
Volkswagen group cars which use PD diesel engines must never be flushed according to the owners manual.
So, I would say check your handbook in the glove box!

£32.30 for my scenic. With the 10% off voucher its £29.07!!

Incidentally, if you untick the 'oil disposal charge' box, do they then give you your old oil back??

I've used National and been very impressed - probably depends on the branch and what mood they're in though.

They can do it at this price because oil in bulk is MUCH cheaper than in 4.5 litre cans. They probably hope to find extra work too (eg brake fluid change, worn tyres, etc), but that's not always a bad thing.

Have been using National for oil changes for the past few years. Always been good prices for Castrol Edge/Magnatec.

I had the oil and filter on my old Nissan Primera changed at the Greenwich branch for about £30. That engine doesn't take a lot of oil so it would have been a little cheaper to do it myself, but I didn't fancy getting my hands dirty and having to get rid of the old oil.

I've heard some people say that they siphon or suck the oil out from the top of the engine, but in my case they did it the normal way by lifting the car and removing the sump plug.

£36.90 for my 2.0 A3 S-Line, when its £47 to buy the oil on its own from halfords Would book this in if my car wasnt in for service next week. Heat added!

maybe good deal for higher spec engines , ie BMW etc, but for my VW sharan its £14 for 5lites of oil and £4 for a oil filer plus 2 hours of my time !!

Also note , where it says about modern engine under engine covers etc, most of these garages use a Pella pump , ie they suck the old oil out through the dip stick entry point easy peasey !!

£38.60 for an Audi A6 3.0TDi.

HOT!

Nice one, the first 'service' for my Fiesta was to be £160 at Ford, and the only thing actually changed was to be the oil, so this is good enough for me.

I'll even try to get them to stamp my service book.

£32.30 all in for Castrol Magnatec oil too.

They need to invest in better (burstable) hosting lol

Good deal for those that don't like to do it themselves but prefer to do my own as I enjoy it and would rather go to the manufacturer and use genuine filters.

Also picked up oil pretty cheap from the manufacturer so worth giving your local dealership a call first if you felt up to the task yourself.

Can't vote cold though as it is a good deal for the ease/time and convenience.

£57.05 for me including filter, mine take 6ltrs and I cant get Castrol edge for less than £10 a litre so it's not bad from me as i get no dirty hands and a free filter.

I found National good for tyres too, they price beat blackcircles including fitting.

This is definetely a good deal though.

Coming up as £43.10 for me all in for my 2004 Astra 1.6.

Wonder what kind of car you need to have to get the job done for £22.50?

I paid £18.50 for my Corsa from a different place (F1) after using these guys to involke their price match gaurantee.

£32.30 for me Skoda Fabia Estate Diesel

WRONG

They just quoted me for £39.50 for my ibiza 1.4 TSI using edge. Wonder if it would affect the warranty if used non seat/vw filter, as National would...?

They have been doing these deals for years. When I last used it I had a car that qualified but now I don't (needs to be under 2 litre I think).
I checked, they use decent oil (either castrol or QXR the last time I was there. The oil alone at Halfords would cost you more that their charge for the entire change incl oil filter.
They will also give you a free check of brakes, shocks etc and will likely recommend some other repair - JUST SAY NO.
It is a good deal (But I have not voted hot or cold because this isn't anything new)

If they use manufacturer approved filters then it will not affect warranty. Edge oil is £14 per litre at Halfords and is 100% mineral. That's a bargain

I would not trust their website, it shows oil for a diesel engine for me, my car is a petrol engined car !!!!

When u say 100% mineral, does that mean synthetic or the opposite? Think my car requires 5w30 fully synth.

Hmm, doesn't play ball for me, no quote:

Most modern engine oils can be used in diesel and petrol cars.

100% mineral would imply a non synthetic oil. However, the oil that the poster mentioned (Castrol Edge) is a fully synthetic oil. You can source part synthetic and fully synthetic oils in your chosen viscosity so, you have the choice there. The fully synthetic will allow longer service intervals and should offer better protection in general.

I am well aware of that, but why quote with oil for a diesel for a petrol engined car, they surely must do an oil for petrol engines.
