Not your average car uses 10w40 oil these days. Modern cars all use 5w30

Some use 0W/20
I don't know why folks use a budget filter when a branded one will only cost a couple of quid more.

Probably all coming out of the same factory anyway ....i usually use Mann, Fram, Bosch or Blueprint and main dealer stuff. I've used a few Crossland in other people's cars and to be fair they look quite well made.

Nope

A lot of those big names manufacture for the main dealer/manufacturer parts market, Fram and Mann are a big names, many people say they both make rubbish filters, can't say I've ever had an issue with any over the past 30 years and I go through a lot of filters.

I didn't dispute that. Fram blueprint mahle Mann Bosch are all top filter makes which are equivalent to the manufacturer filter.

It was the crosland filter I was referring to in this deal which I don't like

Speaking as one who knows, other than for a marginal improvement in your car's fuel economy, it matters not one jot whether you use 5W30 or 10W40. Your engine as a matter of course 'sees' a wide variety of oils. The oil when cold is MASSIVELY viscometrically different to exactly the same oil when it's hot. The oil after a couple of thousand miles is chemically different to the same oil when it's fresh. The oil after say 15,000 miles (not an unreasonable OCI these days) will be MASSIVELY physically, chemically & viscometrically different to how is was after a couple of thousand miles. The oil will also differ considerably if you pile on the motorway miles or do lots of short trips to Lidl.

Set against these differences, the difference between 5W30 & 10W40 (other than for fuel economy) is miniscule...
