I went from a 97 min HM to sub 90 recently and the things that helped were gait retraining, running slower in training and more miles. Trainers probably add tops 4% but thats only for an already speedy runner otherwise i'll recommend something that is properly cushioned for their weight and their running style .

They are. But at our levels, posture form and technique are more important. Running more efficiently will give better gains than any trainer.
