I have one of these type of sledges bought in Germany years ago.
Looks the business compared to the cheap plastic ones but is nowhere as good.

I think you are correct - the ground is too soft under the snow here compared to Europe where the ground is more likely to be frozen - here you need a broad contact with the snow so you ride on top. I still ordered one though????
Just need some snow!
