Often cited as one of the best films of the 2000s and possibly the definitive example of extreme Asian cinema, 'Oldboy' is a brutal, lyrical modern classic of the revenge genre. Based on the Japanese manga of the same name, the film tells the horrific tale of Oh Dae-su (Choi Min-sik), a businessman who is inexplicably kidnapped and imprisoned in a grim hotel room-like cell for 15 years, without knowing his captor or the reason for his incarceration. Eventually released, he learns of his wife's murder and embarks on a quest for revenge whilst also striking up a romance with a young, attractive sushi chef, Mi-do (Kang Hye-jung). He eventually finds his tormentor, but their final encounter will yield yet more unimaginable horrors...

Great film! Check out The Handmaiden if you haven’t already. From the same director, and another decent watch.

Also Thirst was a good movie by the same director, Park Chan-Wook. Good vampire movie that came out around the time there was a lot of dire vampire movies
Recently watched the trilogy again. I thought Oldboy was the weakest of the 3. Confusing as to why it was more successful to English speaking audience than the others. Lady Vengeance in particular is a much better film.
Cramped hallway, a hammer and an endless wave of bad guys. What a scene.

Sounds like John Wick 3 with the early knife scene - brutal!
Heat added and bought
Korean serial killer movies are the best in the world, I saw the Devil, Chaser , memoirs of a killer highly recommend. Non serial killer movies, Oldboy, parasyte, Handmaiden. America always tries to do Eng language remakes as most Americans refuse or cant read subs

Do the other ones include a man eating a live octopus?

No. Is that the standout scene that makes Oldboy a must see film?

Chaser is one of my favourite foreign language film, up there with Memories Of Murder, Bittersweet Life, Cruel Winter Blues, Exile.... Oh forget it there's too many to list!
It's the bit that I remember most vividly, and something that I haven't seen in any other film.
Will we all end up as incestuous eel-eating boxers when we emerge from quarantine too?
