Taken without reason. Imprisoned for 15 years. Released without reason. 5 days to seek the truth...
One day in 1988, ordinary white collar worker Oh Dae-soo (Choi Min-sik) is kidnapped and incarcerated in a private makeshift prison cell, dressed up like a cheap hotel room. With only a TV for company, Dae-soo makes numerous attempts to escape and to commit suicide but they all end up in failure. All the while Dae-soo asks himself what made a man hate him so much enough to imprison him in solitary confinement with no explanation. While suffering from his near-madness, Dae-soo becomes shocked when he watches the news and hears that his beloved wife was brutally murdered. At this very moment, Dae-soo swears to take revenge on the man who destroyed his happy life.

15 years on and without a word of warning Dae-soo is released. Given a new set of clothes, a mobile phone and the attentions of curious sushi waitress Mido, Dae-soo begins to track down his enemy, only to find he may be the pawn in a much bigger game which is only just beginning. Taunting Dae-soo, the culprit gives him just 5 days to catch and kill his captor or Mido will die...

Based on Japanese manga of the same name by Minegishi Nobuaki and Tsuchiya Garon, winner of the Jury Grand Prize at the 2004 Cannes Film Festival and winner of 5 Grand Bell awards in Korea (including Best Film for Park Chan-wook and Best Actor for Choi Min-sik), 'Old Boy' is a masterfully inventive revenge thriller complete with blackly comedic moments.

Not the easiest watch in the world (your girlfriend/wife will almost certainly hate it) Well worth the effort though

This film is amazing, captivating, different (in a good way of course), when i first watched it years ago i couldnt believe how much it took me in, its just brilliant. Well worth £4.99. Id also recommend the OST if you enjoy the film. Heat and rep added as you have good tastes.

Gets disturbing towards the end, will provoke a reaction for sure

My wife enjoyed it as did my mum.

great movie, really enjoyed it, but i'm also a big Korean movie fan as well

Love the film... didn't see the punch line coming either... beautifully filmed too.....

One of my fave films, definitely recommend it. My gf loves it too.

Brilliant film, I hear there's a US remake in the pipeline (no doubt it won't be quite as good). My wife loved this too, so can't understand the comment about wife or girlfriend hating it....

love this movie. Hollywood will blow it as usual.

I watched this at the cinema. Its great! The hammer fight seen was filmed in one take and it looks well good.
The other films directed by Chan-wook Park are good too but i'd say this is the best one out of the few i have seen.

Yeah i heard Spielberg and Will Smith are on the case

Steven Spielberg and Will Smith are planning to collaborate on a remake of Park Chan-wook's Oldboy, according to Variety. The pair, who have been looking for a project to work on together for some time, are said to be in early discussions about reworking the acclaimed Korean thriller, which centres on a man who is kidnapped and held in a dirty cell for 15 years without explanation.

Smith would play the imprisoned man - Choi Min-sik in the 2003 original - who is freed just as he is about to put an escape plan into practice. He is given money, clothes and a mobile phone and sets out to discover who stole his life from him in order to take revenge.

A direct remake would seem to be particularly dark territory for both Spielberg and Smith, as the original contains a number of family-unfriendly themes and sequences, such as the famous live octopus sushi scene. Spielberg is currently said to be searching for a writer.

The original Oldboy was a huge favourite of Quentin Tarantino, who tried to persuade his fellow Cannes jurists to award it the Palme d'Or in 2004. In the end they plumped for the safer territory of Fahrenheit 9/11. It remains to be seen whether Smith and Spielberg will end up making a similar decision.

Great film, I have it on both DVD and Blu-Ray. Well worth a fiver!

most disturbing yet beautiful ending a movie this amazing could have!!!!

10/10!!

I agree, its a wonderful film.
And the best thing is I managed to get it from Sainsbury's for 99p (2-disc) in the January Sale.

superb movie, well worth it...

Awesome Movie! Heat added.

This is definitely one of the high points of Korean cinema. Highly recommended!

I'll add my voice to those singing the praises of this great film.

The rest of Chan-wook Park's Vengeance Trilogy are also very good although both Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance and Lady Vengeance deal with similiar 'dark' themes (Lady Vengeance in particular) so if you don't like Old Boy then they're definately not for you.

How the **** could speilberg and will smith do this film?

Kudos if they pull it off, but I can see it getting toned down, hence being crap :-D

**Puts on tin hat**

I didnt like this film! one of my work mates bigged this film up for ages, I borrowed the DVD, watched and was not impressed, almost turned off half way through! The other chap who borrowed it before me didnt think much either.

This is a brilliant film. How the idea was thought up - I do not know.
Highly recommended.
