Taken without reason. Imprisoned for 15 years. Released without reason. 5 days to seek the truth...
One day in 1988, ordinary white collar worker Oh Dae-soo (Choi Min-sik) is kidnapped and incarcerated in a private makeshift prison cell, dressed up like a cheap hotel room. With only a TV for company, Dae-soo makes numerous attempts to escape and to commit suicide but they all end up in failure. All the while Dae-soo asks himself what made a man hate him so much enough to imprison him in solitary confinement with no explanation. While suffering from his near-madness, Dae-soo becomes shocked when he watches the news and hears that his beloved wife was brutally murdered. At this very moment, Dae-soo swears to take revenge on the man who destroyed his happy life.

15 years on and without a word of warning Dae-soo is released. Given a new set of clothes, a mobile phone and the attentions of curious sushi waitress Mido, Dae-soo begins to track down his enemy, only to find he may be the pawn in a much bigger game which is only just beginning. Taunting Dae-soo, the culprit gives him just 5 days to catch and kill his captor or Mido will die...

Based on Japanese manga of the same name by Minegishi Nobuaki and Tsuchiya Garon, winner of the Jury Grand Prize at the 2004 Cannes Film Festival and winner of 5 Grand Bell awards in Korea (including Best Film for Park Chan-wook and Best Actor for Choi Min-sik), 'Old Boy' is a masterfully inventive revenge thriller complete with blackly comedic moments.

Well that has just ruined my day. With this and the Karate Kid remake the Smith family is seriously starting to annoy me.

Will smith in a remake of oldboy?!!!!? Only if hes the guy getting the ****ing hammer!!!!!

What about the octopus scene? Method acting taken to the extreme!

Brilliant movie. Great story telling. Good balance between humour, action, etc. Smith will probs be ok, but overall the movie will be a let down. Either way it will probably still be a success, just as the departed was (another Hollywood rip of, this time of Infernal affairs), sadly they never capture the mood and atmosphere on the remakes.

Will Smith is doing Oldboy? Sacrilege! :x

The Departed was actually a better film then Infernal Affairs (and yes, I saw Infernal Affairs before The Departed was even made) so there is hope. Not with Will Smith though. The film is so dark, if it is to be remade (which it really doesn't) then you need a directer like David Fincher or someone whos done dark, gritty films.

this is right at the top of my all time favourite films!!, not too sure of a remake!?

Haha, forgot about this. What's the bet that they will keep in the ending from the original film? Somehow I can't see either Will Smith or Spielberg agreeing to that... good deal by the way.

You must be joking....infernal affairs was vastly superior. It was so good 'the deparated' actually ripped identical shots from it because they couldnt better it.

the u.s. version of ring was better than the original ring as well

jerry springers ringmaster was better than all the rings put together, even lord of the rings

Really depressing news on the re-make, but if you enjoyed this I would definitely recommend 3 extremes; three short horror vignettes all by Asian directors, one of which is Park Chan-Wook.

i love this and the whole vengeance trilogy.

If you liked this then I strongly recommend the following S. Korean flicks which are also stunning!

]A BitterSweet Life (2005)

]Tae Guk Gi: The Brotherhood of War (2004)

]Friend (2001)

]Memories of Murder (2003)

And don't forget Chan-wook Park's other 2 films that go with Oldboy to make up his superb Revenge/Retribution trilogy:

]Sympathy for Lady Vengeance (2005)

]Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance (2002)

Also another amazing film from Chan-wook Park is:

]Joint Security Area (2000)

Haha, I know a few people who like departed, not any who have seen Infernal affairs though. The Departed was a typical Hollywood/tripe movie (not as bad as usual), which I could not sit through (and I am usually stubborn enough to sit through some rubbish). The Departed missed many points of the original which helped you relate to both key characters.

The Departed used many different themes that are unique to the US crime genre, and Scorsese's oeuvre in particular.

It wasn't a straight remake, it was an adaptation. They're both good (and bad) in their own rights.

Amazing film but no way does it need an american remake!!!! They get it oh so wrong every time they try.

One of my top ten films ever. I agree with the other poster, don't think they'll leave the last twist in the remake - can't see Will Smith being able to portray that act without worrying about his image/rep afterwards.

From what I've read, the Spielberg/Smith film will not be a remake of Oldboy.

It'll be a new ADAPTATION of the original manga, which I haven't read, but it seems that the Korean Oldboy is also fairly removed from that.

So Spoilberg (See what I did there? ;-)) can produce any old Hollywood revenge pap and not have the grittyness of the Korean film (or even the main twist/questionable subject matter), and he'll just claim, it was his "vision" of the original story.

A fiver says it'll still be pants.
