Olympus EPL-1 Digital Compact System Camera £184.99 @ Argos

I've been watching the price of this camera fall, previous best deal was Argos at £199. It was cheap at £199, but it's now down to just £185! Absolute bargain, cracking little camera. You have to search for it by name though, as it no longer shows in the compact system camera section - a sign that this is the final price cut before it vanishes?

Cracking deal, especially with the extra £10 voucher offer currently on.

I currently own a Panasonic GF3 + 14mm Pancake Lens (only used it once, not sure I like the touch screen tbh)

Assuming the 14mm Pancake fits the Olympus body, would it be worth selling the GF3 body and buying the EPL-1 + 14 - 42mm

Thanks

People considering this camera may want to also look at the NX100, very comparable in reviews, depends on your preference:

agree, great deal, bought one. Cannot find anything much about its sound recording capability with video though.

This is a fantastic camera. Had mine around 8 months and I love it.

Typical, i just bought it yesterday for £199!!! aaaarrggh!!!, is there any way to get a refund?

I dont think Argos will accept returns on cameras
I would try asking for a partial refund

this guy just wants to rebuy it to earn himself £15, so I don't think a partial refund is really going to do him much good.
maybe argos won't take a camera back unless it has a fault, maybe give it a fault.

The Samsung NX100 has an APS-C sized sensor which is about 60% larger than the M4/3 sensor found in the Olympus

oh well, after some research I can see that it is much trouble just for only £15, after all i opened the box so chances are that they will refuse a refund, but maybe a discount?

Thank you just had one left at my local CHEERS OP £10 voucher will do nicely too!!

Why not get the iXUS 220 HS? snapsort.com/com…PL1

You can get it for around £150

I've owned both olympus epl1 and Panasonic gf1 and g1 and gf3, so can answer some of the questions.

They are all cracking cameras.
However the epl1 doesn't have a flash. i brought a flash and it was disappointing battery life, slow and made camera bulky.
But for outdoors these are stunning.
Fir indoors the epl1 focus is a little slow.
My preference is a simple camera and whilst i love these and the quality on a perfect picture is slightly better, more usable is my wifes Sony w130, smaller and is the one id grab ffirst to take a photo.

Still a cracking deal though. my epl1 was 600 when i bought it.

With ebay the worst case scenario is you lose £20. Buy it!!!!!

Oh and lenses are all interchangable between epl1 and gf1 g1 and gf3.

It does for sure, you can see the flash release on the rear so I would take the review with a pinch of salt.

Actually the EPL1 does have flash (pop up on one of the top corners).

I've had the EPL1 for half a year and think it's a good piece of kit. I normally pair mine with the Panasonic 20mm which is still small enough to fit in my jacket pocket

Been after one of these for a while, just reserved the last one at our local argos!
Thanks!

I got the EPL1 last week, does have a flash, takes lovely pictures even on iAuto can't wait to master the manual mode!

From the reviews it seems Samsung crippled the NX100 with quite a poor sensor, I would probably prefer this Olympus one.

which is better this or the gf3???

Having read up a little
Not much in it to be honest
The GF3 is faster, more compact and a nicer screen
Olympus tend to tweak their std colour settings therefore produces a nicer default shot

i like the touch to focus on the gf3...

Thanks renegade27 and all others for good advice , bought an EPL1 last week and am delighted with results . Pop-up flash tilts to avoid shadows and has adjustable power .Took some publicity shots for work in RAW plus JPG which needed no post-processing and leave my Lumix TZ8 way behind .

Also works well with almost any SLR or C-mount lens with a little help from ebay , build quality is as good as my old Olympus OM> Don;t feel bad about losing £ 15 as mine included a memory card and soft Olympus case . Good luck to those looking , I found the Dummies book very useful to plough through this cameras multiple menus

The Canon movie digest is a great feature and watching the movie back after you've taken loads of snaps on holiday is hilarious.

True, but does that really increase photo quality? The NX100 has no flash, btw, and lenses are more difficult to come by cheaply.

Haha, that's very good. Just shows how bad these comparisons are.

The gf3 definately doesn't have a flash! I personally don't like touch screens on a camera lcd, which doubles as a viewfinder, but this is purely personal choice.

The gf3 does have a flash.

Bought an E-PL1 kit for my other half as a replacement for the usual cheap-ish point & shoots she used to use and after a bit of user confusion (thought the camera was more complex to use than it actually was) she absolutely loves it. Don't let you be put off by the fact this camera has been superceeded by the E-PL2 & E-PL3, you'll not be disappointed with the quality of photos.
Also, I bought a cheap m4/3 to Nikon adaptor so I can use all my Nikon lenses with the E-PL1 (albeit in manual exposure/focus mode).

Not only does it have a flash, but it is on a springy arm which allows you to bounce it off the ceiling. The gf3 is a nicely designed little camera.

You are right. I've just checked I owned the Olympus EP1 (which doesnt have a flash) not the EPL1 (which does).

yes it has flash built in.i own one and am very happy with it.its deffo the best camera I ever owned.its quite compact and easy to use as well.

Because of this: "Around 8x larger sensor"

With the supplied lens on this will not fit in your pocket. Seriously think about a pancake or the 14-42 "x" zoom. It means you will take your camera out a LOT more. I went for the GF3+x lens which will cost you around £320 after cashback and the extra portability is worth the extra. The 20mm f1.7 panasonic pancake is very highly regarded but will set you back more than this deal. However it will still be a great lens when you upgrade your body in 3 years time.

Got one reserved, Damn it. I have a Lumix TZ10 and need to make a decision before tomorrow, I also will get another 10% off so it is a good deal but only if it is an improvement over my Lumix.
