I've been looking for a gaming laptop for the last few weeks and have ended up with this. Nothing else can come near the price for a RTX 2070 (Max-Q) and this is looking to be one of the leading contenders. As the RTX series is new there are still very few reviews available.

  • NVIDIA® GeForce RTX™ 2070 (8 GB GDDR6); Improved cooling; Upgrade access door; Full-size 4-zone lighting backlit keyboard with numeric keypad and NKRO; Faster 2x2 Wi-Fi®;Thunderbolt port

Most users will have to factor in either selling the 1x16gb ram stick and buying 2x8gb or buying an extra 1x16gb stick approx (£100)

Do you have a suggestion for the second 16GB stick? I'm not sure of the timings until i receive the laptop and take a look.
If specc'd the same, this comes in at £1587 minus the cost of an OS (most of us will have a "copy" of windows 10 lying around somewhere)

And has 2x 8GB instead of 1x16GB

I can only suggest waiting until you can match the ram, I did mix a crucial stick with the supplied Samsung stick in my MSI laptop with no issues but its not guaranteed.
Apparently the laptop and max-q versions of the rtx series are so cut down in laptops, to the point where the 2070 max-q is only a few percent to a laptop 1070. And you can get one of those for ~£1400 Really not worth imo, especially with the lack of ray tracing games

For the sake of a couple of hundred you may as well get 2070 all new games will start to get ray tracing before long, no point wasting £1400 and in a year or 2 spend again.

Mmm I wouldn't count on it, it's early technology and appears to hit fps hard when enabled. And if you did want to play with ray tracing, it would be wiser to wait until games you love actually support it, rather than buying now and hoping for the best xD

Dont buy a HP laptop unless you can fix it yourself after warranty. My HP has become corrupted and loading a new version of Windows didnt help. Their website just gives you the run around with community groups and common problems as well as driver downloads. None of these worked. No online chat and no technical online support except a paid service that will cost you an arm and a leg. Avoid at all costs.

No idea about this one, you'll have to trawl the internet using the model variant. HP don't seem to ever list Max-Q on their website
So in that case is Alienware with 1070 OC , 1440p, 120 Hz , G-Sync for £1676 way better choice ..

That's 17.3". There are plenty of other options due to the form factor.

What's the thermals like on this please Tei, I had the 1060gtx version and the fans wound up so high I sent it back. Still looking to replace it or build my own pc, not sure what to do yet.
I haven't checked the GPU temps during load but whilst you can hear the fans during resident evil 2 I wouldn't say that they were anywhere near maxing out. I'll have a play when I get chance and get you some data

So at 25% volume on the laptop you can just about hear the fan. its there but sounds like a breeze of air rather than a whirring blender noise. Typing this now the fans are on and I can clearly hear them with no sound as they continue to bring the temps down. They took about a minute to slow down to a very quiet level, 3 minutes to inaudible/off. Personally I'm more than happy with it, bearing in mind the horesepower it contains it copes very well.
Thank you, what's it like under heavy gaming?

Above is under benchmark so it's about as stressful as it can be. The metal above the keyboard gets very toasty and you can feel warmth from the keyboard. I've not done a stressful game over 2 hours as yet so couldn't say what it would be like after 14hr :P
Yeah, the keyboard got warm on the one I had, not too bad but warm enough, I had to undervolt it to get the temps down, is your as it is out the box? Looks like it runs fairly cool, cooler than i remember, it was just under heavy load it sounded like it had jet engines attached to cool it down.
