Have you ever wanted to stay in an actual mediaeval fortress? The Grade I-listed Lumley Castle, in County Durham, has beautiful flagstone corridors lined with busts, and an old library-now-bar with gilt paintings and floor-to-ceiling bookcases. If only there were some suits of armour!

The food looks and sounds great, especially the Elizabethan-style banquet, followed by a jaunt to the dungeons... it even has its own escape room (£15 per person) featuring the resident ghost, Lily — lumleycastle.com/lil…ey/.

"Dining options at the hotel include the Library Bar, the Knight's Restaurant (for à la carte lunches and dinners) and The Barons Hall, which hosts Elizabethan-style banquets followed by a disco in the castle dungeons."

Note: Travelzoo members get 15% off dinner when booked in advance.

Stayed here a few times years ago when I used to travel with work to the region, was often a really cheap option. Just be warned that they have some rooms that arent actually inside the castle itself, so if this is really important for your stay, make sure what you are getting when you book.

Good to know.
Stayed here for a wedding, rooms were cramped and dated in the courtyard.
I’ve spent the night there and the food was lovely, heat added
Stayed last March in the castle. It's o.k, the rooms vary in size but ours was nice. Breakfast was good, service fine. It's very handy for Durham and the N.E coast which has some lovely walks. If you go in to Chester Le Street don't use the Weatherspoons for food, it was awful (alright for beer though). For £79 it's worth it if you've never stayed in a castle (although it's more like a manor home).

You can’t go wrong having lunch at Sambuccas if you go into Chester le Street.
Nice little Italian place. Good pizza.
Granted, a little shabby but, £5 for 3 course lunch.
