It's massively hit and miss. Some stores will some won't. Depends on the staff in the store and which way the wind is blowing that day. I gave up trying after trying 3 different stores when I bought my Oneplus 3t earlier in the year.
I have asked 3 different ones in my area. No student discount.
I'm a big fan of oneplus and have no hesitation in recommending the 3 or 3T. However, the 5 seems to have problems. Make sure you do a bit of research and satisfy yourself that it is a phone you want.

Not really. The price is just right and is still far cheaper than most of the smartphones on the market. You're getting the top-end Snapdragon 835 and a choice of 6 or 8GB RAM - something where most OEMs still offer 4GB. You're getting one of, if not, the second best DXO rated camera in a smartphone on DXOMark complete with DOF sensor. Fingerprint, headphone jack, 1080p display, metal construction and decently big battery.

In comparison, the S8 is £680 or there abouts and the camera doesn't rate as high as the OP5.

So no, everything above £350 is fine for this phone.

Everyone expects everything for cheap these days.

S8 can be purchased for about £500 on Amazon Europe (many deals already posted on HUKD) - BTW I'm not a big fan of Samsung any more due to their ridiculous pricing tactics!

I mean, not everyone will buy from Amazon EU. Even at £500 its still a cheaper phone with a lot more to offer.

I regret getting my S8 and not waiting.

Too bad this is all fantasy/paper specs. Sure, oneplus might have 6 or 8GB of RAM but what is the point when this is not utilised. Apps running in memory still close and have to restart anyway.

DXO or not, actual tests show it's not better than S8 or LG6 especially in low light conditions. On top of that there is no OIS so video looks stuttery and worse than 3/3T.

Also don't forget they inverted the screen position for some reason so you might experience jelly effect when scrolling.

S8 costs between 500-550 depending on the offer.

So yes, OP5 is not worth buying especially at the current price.

Does copy/paste make you proud instead of having a personal opinion? G6 is £330, Moto Z was £299, Axon 7 is below £300 so if you don't mind getting ripped off by OP that's your problem mate. SD835 and 8gb RAM means absolutely nothing since so many soc's like SD625, SD820/821 and the latest Kirin 955/960 offer the exact same day to day performance. I feel sorry for you really.

S8 comes with so many accessories though not free . Samsung Dex lets you use phone like computer. Samsung VR and Gear watch and camera. S8 has also the best screen in the world, even the new iphone 8 is going to use it. Plus it has micro sd slot. What is the use of 8Gb ram when you cannot use it. Plus no usb 3.0 on Oneplus 5 so cannot output 4K video to TV directly or use USB C hubs now selling in the market which can all be used with S8.

You want my own opinion? You've just had it. I mean this could be me but I'd still trade my S8 for a OnePlus 3, the sheer battery life and power is far superior to my S8. Pahaha, Kirin is a joke of a SOC, I wouldn't touch it with a barge pole - it's the reason they're cheaper. I like how you jump to a conclusion of a copy and paste job, I feel sorry for you really.

Oh you mean the dock that the majority of Samsung users aren't going to use (and that's coming from an S8 owner). VR is still pants really and we're still a long way off proper VR on mobiles. Micro SD slot isn't a viable argument anymore, give the record a rest. A hub on a smartphone, pahahaha, jesus. What next, you can argue you can use a hairdryer on your S8? 2014 called, they want their smartwatches back - Smartwatches are a dying fad. Outputting 4K to a TV, being tethered to a TV? No thanks. As for the display, well, bye bye battery life.

And you claim the iPhone 8 will use the same screen, I mean I'd like a source at least to prove this? And a source they're releasing an iPhone "8" (8 being the main focus because it could well be a 7S). I mean they surprised us all releasing just an "iPad".

Just read the news . Apple has paid billions to Samsung to use their infinity display. Apple will also hide the touch button below the display, and produce a phone without bezel like S8 . Even Essential phone by Andy Rubin is going to be without bezel. Big bezel phones like Oneplus 5 will soon belong to history.

*sigh* it's not a solid source though is it, because these are just rumors, there's nothing set in concrete and we've yet to have the Apple keynote. I doubt Apple would "pay billions to Samsung to use their infinite display" either, the fact you believe clickbait articles is laughable.

Buying advice needed!

I was on the verge of getting a OnePlus5 128gb today - for £449 (I have a £50 voucher to use on it) - and was looking to buy it outright, and then either keep my old unlimited 3G data sim only contract, or get their 20gb for £21 Sim Only deal... I currently have a Nexus 5 that is constantly switching on and off, so need to change soon, and liked the idea of the 128gb on board after the puny 16gb on the N5.

I'd be using mainly for web browsing and podcast playing/music, especially through the speakers so it would need to be loud, and a solid battery as i'll be using it on the train daily - the 8gb sounds good, as does the processor, but it sounds like these aren't really utilised?

Without all the x is crap stuff (as all of these phones are pretty good), is there anything else for £500 outright or under that might be better suited - I saw the Google Pixel XL for £499 in CPW and that looked decent, and I would've considered the G6 too - put off the S8 by the huge price and the number of reports of broken screens already.

I upgraded from the Nexus 5 to the 128GB model. Battery life is fantastic, 8 hours of SOT!

There are 6 phones with a DXO Mark rating higher than the Oneplus 5.
I got one of these yesterday and am delighted with it. Despite the criticisms above I'm not convinced there's anything better for the money, there's certainly better phones, but this is incredibly fast, slim, lag free and battery life is brilliant. Coming from the Motorola Nexus 6 I had the only thing I occasionally miss is the much larger screen, but only when playing games.

I also thought I might be able to help on the student discount thing. I had a ring around and you need to get the staff to try and put the item through the till to then be able to identify the discount, which the store we bought from were happy to do (although the staff member still needed help from the store manager).

The key might be that it is a student discount; the only proof we needed in the end was some ID proving student status at a college (my son used his college photo ID), so not sure if NUS membership is sufficient?

Even after being told by the manager of the store how to access the discount, the shop staff still needed help, so it's clearly not obvious on the tills. I suggest trying to ring the store I bought from to see if they can help explain what to do, if you don't get any joy. I've attached a pic of my receipt just to show it is still possible. I think it pays to be persistent but explain the process to the shop staff, as it's clear they don't all know about it.

I was also offered the phone without a top-up, but I needed an O2 SIM anyway just for priority moments access, so took the £15.

Well, if it helps, 8 months on, battery life is still fabulous. And you are wrong about the Nexus 6 screen size, both physically and in terms of resolution.

Nexus 6: 5.96-inch QHD AMOLED display with a resolution of 2560×1440 pixels (493 PPI)

Oneplus5: 5.5-inch HD AMOLED with a resolution of 1920x1080 pixels (401 PPI)

I know, I've owned both.
