Hot, just had a read up on Atmos. Sounds excellent for anyone looking to buy a new receiver.

I know, I should DYOR, but what exactly is "Atmos". Is it just another marketing tool to get me buy yet another AV receiver, even though my current one is great? Or is it really worth it?

how many speakers am I supposed to have in my lounge? 5.1 takes up enough space as it is!

Not as comfy as other Onkyos though.

Supposed to be the biggest thing in surround sound since surround sound. From what i understand the basic setup is the same as a 5.1 with an additional 2 front upward firing speakers that bounce sound off the ceiling. Yes you need a new receiver.

£73.75 if paying with a Sterling credit card.

NB 5.1.2 sound was featured on the Gadget show a couple of weeks back and appeared to blow the presenters away ....

Presumably you could use this pair to complete a 7.1 setup?

Or would these be an upgrade on the front speakers of my tannoy tfx 5.1?

Seems expensive for an unknown brand.

You can stack them on your existing speakers

Founded in... 1946, worth about $500m, they are not unknown by any means (they don't however make anything other than audio kit so haven't got the household recognition of samsung, panasonic, lg, etc).

Onkyo and being an unknown brand has been a standing joke on here for probably 4 years now. Somebody said you would be better buying a known brand such as Sony or Panasonic and still hasn't lived it down. Its all in good taste though and I suspect he'll be along shortly

Bought these for my atmos setup running7.2.2 and they are garbage sound is awful from them if you want an atmos setup you really need ceiling speakers. Or if you can't have ceiling speakers go for different brand.

It doesnt work like 5.1 with Atmos it doesnt become 7.1 its known as 5.1.2 or 7.1.2. You get the idea.

Mine sound fine it all depends on your system if you have great big expensive floor standing speakers then obviously they are not the quality you want but for most peoples setup they are great and by the fact you say you have 7.2.2 you dont have a normal lounge setup 7 channels and 2 subs used is a big setup. What do you expect for £70 they sound great on my Onkyo 636 amp with my Boston Acoustics speakers they add another dimension to the sound i think Dolby are telling a few lies when saying its the greatest breakthrough since 5.1 but its alright.

If you have a normal system they will sound great if you have £1000 floor standing speakers get some £500 Atmos speakers. Just remember that the movie has to have a Atmos sound track.

They are in my 1970 Hi-Fi Yearbook, where their "integra 75" amp boasting 22w/ch was £97.88 .
The trouble is that there aren't many real "hi-fi" shops around anymore, people buy their sound kit from shops that sell fridges and hairdryers, where staff product knowledge applies only to flogging extended warranties.
Brings back the memories though, anyone else remember Sugden, Lowther, Leak, Armstrong. ?

I think they still make Leak stuff but its very expensive. when i was a lad my Dad was a real audiophile and i remember going into a proper HiFi shop called Bridge HiFi regularly it was great but they have been gone 20 years or more. As my dad would upgrade his separates, which was a lot id get his old ones. At 15 i had a system that my friends could only dream about i think that's the reason i got a job as a sound engineer when i got older, i just love tech. I do think that Richersound is pretty good some of the guys know their kit its the luck of the draw who you get though.

Got to be at least 2, maybe 3 year old joke. LoughboroughGuy is, however, now the best known HUKDer there is.

He's to be found at the lingerie deals

Didn't know you could get Atmos at home now. Watched Tomorrowland in cinema with Atmos and it was awesome.

Atmos is just lots of speakers, can't see how it would be suitable for 99% of homes.

I heard it in all its glory (at Dolby) and didn't think it was anything that great.
