My only issue with them is when watching movies, things like explosions and stuff blast through the speakers, and if I turn it down a bit, I can barely hear dialog after the action, so then I need to turn it up again. Maybe I need to change settings? I don't know, but out of the box it should be calibrated at least a little for this kind of thing? What do I know.

Movies are mixed to be played loud, at a cinema. That's the same with any system without processing to reduce the dynamic range. Check to see if it has a night mode or dynamic volume. This will quiet down the explosions and boost the quiet scenes. (edited)

You want all the latest surround sound formats: Dolby Atmos, DTS: X. You want 4k 120hz passthrough if you're a PS5/Xbox Series X gamer. And you want multiple HDMI 2.2 inputs to ensure you've enough capacity for current and future devices.

You might consider receivers that offer environment-assessment technologies so it can cater the sound profile based on the acoustics and dimensions of the room to optimise the sound for you.

Wireless technologies are out there for wireless surround/rears speakers, that can be great for rooms where cables can't be buried/hidden.

You might also look at fan noise and energy consumption.

I even made LG his own logo back in the day, it might still be buried in another Onkyo deal somewhere.

Found the original file (created July 2011) for your amusement/archive purposes.

Most modern amps have so much wasted empty space inside. They could easily be shrunk to be more sleek and compact. They keep them big to appeal to audiophools who think bigger is better. Same with the boxy aesthetics, zillions of pointless RCA connection ports that never get used, and 80s-style dot-matrix LCD screens when it would only cost them pennies more to use a high resolution OLED display instead. Nostalgia amongst boomers is a big seller, that's why they still look the same as amps from 40 years ago.

Only an audiophool would believe that having 5cm of empty air between components will somehow block RF interference and lead to better sound quality

Try dissipating 5x155 Watts in package the size of a phone. 🔥

That’s a different setting. AV AMPs normally have a Night mode which compensates for dynamic range, when played at a low volume. (edited)
