Good find op, in fact Richer Sounds is also same price, so may go with them.

Currently looking for a 4K AV receiver around £400-500 price range, so far it's a choice between the Sony 1080, Denon 2600 or this Onkyo 686. Anyone has good or bad experience with these please?
Currently got a 10 years old Onkyo and it has been great so far, but need 4k. Also only have 5.1 set up with a mixture of floor standers (AE Evo 3), Tannoy center and rear, worth upgrading as well?

Found this while hunting for Sony deal. Hopefully strdn 1080 earc might work with my LG c9
£327 on Amazon. amazon.co.uk/Onk…43/

For £2 pounds Richersounds will probably price match.

I've only dealt with Petertyson once, and it was very disappointing. That's just my experience, I'm sure others have had good experiences with them.

I had the Onkyo 686 from Richer Sounds and had so many problems with using ARC that I had to return it. It would randomly decide that there was no audio signal coming from my TV and not play any sound. The weird thing was though was that it was truly random. Sometimes when turning the TV on the sound worked, sometimes it didn't. Sometimes when switching the input from an HDMI source (a games console for example) back to the TV input the sound would work, sometimes it wouldn't.

Richer Sounds replaced the unit and I still had the same issues. I eventually switched to a Pioneer VSX-LX303 when it was on offer at the same price I bought the Onkyo at (£399 at the time) and have had no issues with ARC at all.

Try this site zkelectronics.com/com…pe/ and play around with the different receivers to see how they compare. The Sony doesn't rate well, the Denon and Onkyo are similar.

I have the DN1080 and agree with posts re slow user interface but you can leave with it. The Sony sounds abs fantastic for movies and music really lives up to the reviews. I had similar budget to you and can honestly say I’m still as made up with this as the day I had it. The phantom surround back feature is great too.

If you're looking at spending up to £500, last year's Denon x3500h from PT is much better than all those options.
I went for an onkyo as it had everything I needed for a fraction of the price but I ended up regretting it as I had the no sound issue too.

Yes, others may be a bit better just for music but it really depends on the speakers your trying to drive and your expectations. Lots of people very happy with them musically. I needed a power amp to get the best out of mine and an now very pleased with it musically but my Kef Rs are very power hungry and would normally be paired with higher end kit.

I have the Denon, no issues with Movies or music. I've got it paired up with Monitor Audio Gold 300(4g) and a Gold C250 centre (5G I couldn't get hold of a C350).

I paid £350 from Richer sounds a few months ago for the Denon.

I currently own the Onkyo and have only had the no sound issue once and I’ve owned this for 2 years now.

Even though I’ve only had an issue once with this I’m still disappointed with the 686. I’ve always had Onkyo and this isn’t a patch on previous ones for sound quality. It has 4K, works with airplay etc but it just doesn’t have the the sound quality I’ve come to expect from Onkyo. It was a toss up between this and a Denon at the time of purchase and I went with what I knew - sadly that was a mistake 😔

If you're not in a hurry to upgrade and IF gaming is something that you might be using it for (especially if you've got a One X or are considering a PS5 or Scarlet) then you may want to wait till next years models get released as they'll likely have HDMI 2.1.
If you are having a no sound issue, try using a HDMI cable that doesn't have pin 13 connected. It's quite a common problem.
There are adaptors available for this sometimes called "CEC less".

Not sure but think onkyo own pioneer now.

Had an onkyo 606 for years now but its always had the no hdmi signal problem. Takes about 5 mins to connect. It has recently started with the no sound issue.

Next amp i think will be a yamaha. Onkyo are to unreliable.

You're right, Onkyo own Pioneer. I'd guess there's independence in the day to day running of the two businesses though and they develop products separately.
It's a shame these threads always get detailed with sofa and yoghurt jokes etc.

Interesting that experiences of this AVR are middling - the unit seems to get some decent reviews out in the wild? I'd buy this in a heartbeat if there was a decent bundle offer with some good but cheaper speaker for maybe £600

Decent AVR? Kinda feels like pioneer have fallen off a cliff market share-wise since the early 2000s?
Now Onkyo have presumably got over the hdmi board fiasco they're still a dubious recommendation given they dumped the excellent Audyssey room EQ and went for their own generally considered rubbish version. Yamaha are definitely worth consideration but are top end of each feature point.

At that price I'm assuming that was the 2500? Those speakers are high sensitivity so would be easily driven but I'm surprised you went with something so low end for them, a 6500 or even 8500 would be more usual from the Denon range?

Sorry, I quoted the wrong price. It was £480 as they price matched someone. I wasn't too bothered about going higher end, I listened to a Demo in the shop, and it was good enough for me. Plus living in a flat really isn't the environment for high end audio, as I never have it loud, the quality at low level is what I got it for. When I decide to sell the flat and move to a house, I'll probably look into a better setup then.
