Onkyo TX-SR607 Review CNET UK Conclusion
For the money, we think the Onkyo TX-SR607 is a corker. In fact, it would still be a corker if it cost another couple of hundred quid. The only sensible alternative we can suggest is one of Onkyo models from last year's range. With a new line-up coming in, it's entirely possible you could snag a bargain with an older model.
No review of an AV receiver would be complete without reminding you to spend as much on your audio gear as you do on your screen. Trust us, a lovely receiver like this needs a set of terrific speakers to make it come alive. So get saving now.

Review:
Review: Onkyo TX-SR607 AV Receiver Verdict
Try though we might, the TX-SR607 is hard to fault. It delivers the sort of sparkling sound quality you'd expect from a receiver costing a lot more, while the feature list is similarly impressive - the highlights being Dolby Pro Logic IIz (if you can accommodate the extra speakers of course) and the inclusion of six HDMI inputs. But if you're not already sold, then its ultra-simple user interface and all-round versatility should just about seal the deal. The 1080i upscaling limitation is the only thing that might make you think twice, but it's a minor chink in otherwise magnificent armour. Rating:

No buy a Stereo AMP (unless you plan to upgrade to 5.1 later)

I gave up giving any credence to What Hifi reviews when I found some HDMI cable reviews (e.g. whathifi.com/Rev…ve/). "Amazing sonic impact"... from a digital cable. No siree, bunch of idiots.

Have to disagree about the cess pool bit, its a pretty good receiver for the money, ok its got the faroudja chip which isnt great (your paying a hell of a lot more to get the REON) but set it to pass through and its a good amp for running something like Q-Acoustics 5.1 or that range of speaker. (1010i's on offer at superfi for £349).

id rather have the onkyo thanks.....the denon in this price range is the onhly thing worth considering against the onkyo

Plenty of posts on AV forums about this and other Onkyo Receivers saying there is a problem with heat, seems the video processor on them gets somewhat hot, so people have resorted to putting all sorts of modified PC cooling fans over the unit to expel hot air from whatever cabinets they are using.

Buy with caution if you have limited space.

i always buy decent cables and qed and chord are the ones i use and have excellent build quality, but i get them cheap...and id never buy the cheapo hdmi cables are my experience with the ones ive tried (garbage build quality)......however, even i laugh at some of the cringeworthy statements attributed to these cables by what hifi, etc....its almost like they treat cables like wine...lol

I own this amp and I am very pleased. The difference in quality is night and day from my old Sony DB930 Receiver.

Regarding it running hot, yes it does but it hasnt caused me any problems :-D

Agreed the faroudja chip which is in most products nowadays is awful if im honest , which is why i went for an amp with the REON chip Onkyo tx-sr906 because when i had seen what that was capable of i had to have it., Anchor Bay is way better as a middle ground, my friend is basically looking to buy an amp right now but considering the chip inside this one he has decided against it..

Also phone them up direct and mention Superfi's price they may be able to budge on price they seem very decent to talk too.

I have the 606 and the Q accoustic 1010i, 6.1 and they sound amazing. Tbh i never go by reviews i always go and hear them setup in somewhere like richersounds, its the best way...

I was undecided on the Sony, Denon and the Onkyo after hearing them all i liked the Onkyo plus it had more HDMI`s which is a bonus when you have a lot of equipment...

Good choice GQ, I went for the 876 because it had the REON too, Embarassingly though Ive still ended up setting it to pass through lol, The upscalling on the PS3 I found was as good
Awesome sound though, running the 3005se with HTB2 sub, really happy with it

yeh but come on the 906 is around £1000, over 3 times this...its an excellent amp but most people couldnt justify the extra money.....im happy with my onkyo 605 for av....its fine for music too, sure there are better music amps but this is fine

ordered one from here, cancelled the sevenoaks one as they've let me down with the long lead time.

Yes theyve been replaced by their new 2000 range, the 1010i is a great set up still though, a few places selling off the last of their stock, if you can get a set there well worth £349. If you click on stock enquiry it says they have the beech ones in stock.

If you are have predominanetly HDMI connected components then bang for buck the Sony offers better value for money, the Onkyo's main advantage is it offers HDMI upscaled output to whatever feeds are input, therefore only needing a single HDMI cable into the TV...but the heat issues are somewhat offputting.

The Onkyo at this price fits the Receiver middle ground, offering upscaling of Video inputs but with heat issues. The Denon AVR-1910 is £100 more, but better.

What Hi FI bias aside its a choice of £250 for the Sony and doing without the HDMI upscaling, the Onkyo for £299 and concerns with heat issues or the Denon for £399 within the middle ground field. Personally speaking the Sony offers the best bang for buck seeing you can let your TV process the signals.

I was looking at the Superfi site last night. Although they claim they had the beech ones in stock, there was no 'add to basket' button. I checked the site again lunchtime and they're just down as 'discontinued'..not even a stock checker option :?
