No takers? Seriously? It must be a slow night...

You'd be better off with an Onkyo. I mean a Sony. Oh whatever.

Unknown brand better buy a Sony

Good price, excellent amp judging by the reviews and awards. Loads of inputs!

I think this is smokin' hot but i do not need it.......but if you do? Then you will not go far wrong with this little baby....

Onkyo - top quality brand - hot

Good price, £25 cheaper than Richer Sounds

Heat added - good price. However make sure you don't box it in and give it room for air to circulate, Onkyo's have a habit of getting hot unless they've done something about it since the xx7's...

They have done something about it - they've added in a fan now. That's not to say that it doesn't still need the air to breathe though. I got one for around £400 this time last year, and I'm very pleased with it.

Good advice. You could fry an egg on top of my 905! In an enclosed space they will also cook all the surrounding electronics

I just had to come in and have a look for Sony and Loughborough Guy references....

Grab a few Wharfedale Xarus 5000's - unless your budget's over a grand it's certainly the best you'll get for your money. Then look out for a decent centre (I'm using a Dali - was worried about sound matching but the amp seems to do an amiable job compensating for any differences) and a sub (if you even need one with these beasts...)

just ordered cheers

two subs needed for this beast! I plugged some £17 (hot deal on here) creative 2.1 creative speakers into my TV last night as was using them in the garden to listen to music and just thought I would give it a try. The difference was amazing even on those little things - the sub kicked out a huge sound and the little speakers set apart gave a great depth and wide stereo field. Bloody shame I live in a non detached house or I would defo get a 7.2 system and projector.

OK folks a serious question...

...Why would I buy this box and a set of speakers rather than buying the hot-off-the-shelves HT-S5405 for £350, apart from the fact that this is 7.2 and can be used 5.1?...

...and an Eggsellent Easter to all our readers.

Excellent amp, hot!

If only I didn't already have a 606! Hot stuff

Debugging means they take the centres out of the speaker terminals so you can fit banana plugs for easier fitment of cables. Usually these are blanked off. I got a TX-SR876 from Creative and had a 605 before that.

I nearly bought one of these 2 weeks ago, I wanted a set of Pioneer SHS100 speakers which handle 150w from Richer Sounds but the MK branch had sold out of the speakers even though the website said they have 3 sets in stock, they were a mere 80 quid. They suggested the £99.95 Yamahas but are only up to 80w so don't even nearly match the amp. I have been stuck since then as I don't want to spend a fortune on speakers as I live in a semi so can't crank it up too much hence wasting money on fancy speakers.

Yes if you have not levered out the caps before (which I had not) it is a bit worrying doing it as you are scared of doing some damage.

I bought one of these about 1 month ago and am very pleased, but I do sometimes lay a wake at night wondering whether I should have bought a well known brand like Alba, Goodmans, Matsui, Sony or Technika.

Don't know the model number mentioned but I think it's predecessor was based on the 307 amp which is obviously lower end than this unit. You can have the same argument about buying any old £100 5.1 set up. If you're going to buy uber-cheap speakers to go with this probably there won't be a massive reason, depends on your budget (or what you already have)

Ha, shows that you know nothing. Matsui is actually quite a low quality brand.

Not sure about Alba as well, but sounds posh.

voted hot!!! fantastic bit of kit, i tested this and the pioneer 920 and both were exceptional. good spot op!

Thanks for the post!I wonder if 'richer sounds 'will price match and VIP voucher in RS will reduce by another tenner?

"FREE Quickstart Guide " lol ?

Thanks for the reply - the Onkyo HT-S5405 is brand new and launched just a few eeks ago and comes complete with speakers including a power-sub. I will be starting from scratch and have a tiny budget, compared with what some of the folk on here seem to have spent and can just about scrape £350 for the HT-S5405 and that seems a better bet for me (??) as the room is small, I don't play games and don't want/need to 100% emulate sitting in the middle of a lion's cage when watching a wild-life programme!!

can anyone recommend a good 5.1 speaker package for this?
Thanks

Boston Acoustics Soundware Xs 5.1

Good Deal Onkyo superb make. Unknown my ass

Still using my 605 (1st gen HD Reciever) so this 608 (3rd / 4th gen?) if anything like that will be awesome.

7.2 but 5 x 160 watts into 6 ohms???

Currently the same price at Richer Sounds for VIP Members.

For a room of 15 ft by 10 ft would there be any point going for 6.1 or 7.2?
thanks
