Apologies but couldn't resist.

Enjoy cinematic Dolby Atmos and DTS:X audio with the truly immersive-sounding Onkyo TX-SR494.

The next step-up in surround sound
Following on from the SR393, the Onkyo TX-SR494 uses a 7.2 channel amplifier for full-fat Dolby Atmos and DTS:X immersion. Alternatively, configure as a 5.2 system and use a second pair or stereo speakers in another room.

Dolby Atmos, DTS:X and DTS Neural:X at their best
This Onkyo AVR makes the most of both Dolby Atmos and DTS:X. The formats use either ceiling or upward firing speakers to deliver an immersive, multi-dimensional sound. Dolby Atmos and DTS:X make an overhead aircraft sound frighteningly realistic or a tropical storm a drenching experience. DTS Neural:X upmixes non-DTS:X signals, giving you a similarly enveloping sound with other sources.

Get the Atmos or DTS:X effect, without the extra speakers
It's not always possible to accommodate Atmos or DTS:X height speakers, which is when Dolby Atmos Height Virtualization and DTS Virtual:X come in handy. Play any Dolby format and enjoy a more immersive sound with virtual height enhancement – using your existing speakers. DTS Virtual:X also creates a more enveloping sound from any DTS codec. Compatible with 2 or 5.1 speaker configurations, DTS Virtual:X gives a greater impression of height and immersive sound.

Quality Onkyo sound
With its high output transformer and large capacitors, the TXSR494 is easily up to reproducing deep, dynamic cinema sound. For signal purity, Onkyo use a discrete amplifier circuit rather than an inferior IC chip. Although more costly to produce, discrete amplification offers many benefits including a purer sound, better dynamics and reduced heat build-up for improved reliability.

Power a second speaker zone or bi-amp the front speakers
For the simple multiroom audio, the Onkyo TX-SR494 gives you the option of running a 5.2 channel surround sound system along with a pair of stereo speakers in another room. Alternatively, bi-amp your front speakers with a 5.2 system, giving them added control and definition.

Connect with Bluetooth
With built-in Bluetooth, it's not just cinema sound that's given a boost but music from your smartphone or tablet, too. Use Onkyo’s Advanced Music Optimizer and any compressed music formats are given a richer, more expansive sound.

The hub of your system
Four HDMI inputs let you plug in your set-top TV box, games console, Blu-ray player and more. The HDMI ARC socket connects to your TV, pushing video through to the TV while, simultaneously, accepting an audio signal back from it. A range of RCA phono, optical and coaxial sockets are perfect for other sources, such as a CD player and network streamer. There’s even a USB power outlet – ideal for powering a smart TV dongle device.

Tuned for your room
Activate the AccuEQ room acoustic calibration function and enjoy bespoke audio settings for your room. The system detects the speaker size and positioning and adjusts to suit the room’s acoustics. It even selects the ideal subwoofer crossover setting, for seamless bass that’s not too overwhelming. The result gives you smooth, enveloping sound, that’s perfect for your room and all at the touch of a button.

What has happened to the AV Receiver market in the last 5 years? Prices seem to have shot up, there’s no low end segment yet the technology hasn’t really evolved a lot.

I use mine mainly with my projector, I think people with TV's use the built-in sound or a soundbar. And because TV's have gotten so big now, I reckon less people buy projectors, and so they must sell less receivers, increasing the prices. These are just my thoughts though.

I believe you can get a better specified Denon 1700h for similar money at a different retailer I'm not allowed to mention which I have no affiliation to. I have not had any experience of this amp so cannot comment however I currently have an Onkyo and looking to upgrade. I think the Denon will be better if you are looking for HDMI 2.1 features.

Yep, you can...I posted a deal as well from the retailer you cannot mention recently that was pulled immediately from HUKD...self promotion apparantly, but a reputable Northern England AV retailer that have been trading since the 1960s. Bought the 1700H myself, prices of AV receivers have gone through the roof, very pleased with the 1700H coming from the brilliant Pioneer VSX-924 it is replacing.

    This is not very good.
You are much better off with the Denon X1700H at £479 from PeterTyson.

Had my Onkyo TX-NR515 for donkeys years and it's still going strong. Wouldn't mind an upgrade but it's not giving me any reasons to just yet.

Didn’t they go bust a few years ago and now owned by Sharp?
    GoNz0's avatar
They stopped making and selling them so yeah, good as. It's a shame as my new Denon has nothing on the old Onkyo 609...

Dolbly Atmos is amazing but if you've got headphones just listen a Dolby encoded Atmos soundtack: your ears will do the decoding.
    ScottyPro's avatar
I think DTS-X is way better than Atmos, pity there are few discs around though that have it.

It isn't HotUKDeals without an Onkyo deal. I see "unknown brand get a Sony" and "sofa" has already been mentioned.

£500 and the radio doesn't even include DAB ?

I know some may question the quality of DAB, but if what I want to listen to is on DAB, I need DAB.

If Sharp are doing the manufacturing now, they're basically rebadges and I thought Sharp were generally rubbish this days?
