Thanks OP, just ordered one for my kids for them to argue or to keep them quiet over the Easter break. They watched Will Smith in 'The Persuit of Happiness' the other night and in the movie he solved the cube in a few minutes, this obviously raised a lot of questions on how this is achieved, so now they can find out how easy or hard it is to solve the cube without the magic of movies making it look so simple!

Certainly not the best built cube (gets harder to turn with use and stickers fall off) but a great price.

just plonk off the side bit and stick some wd40 in there, works wonders

down to 1m45s now! WOO

Will Smith did actually learn how to solve one when he made that movie...

1m 45 is very impressive I'm probably around 3/4 minutes.

Aha ... reminds me of days 30-ish years ago with my oiled and filed-down "speed cube" ... had to be absolutely precise with rotations as if left one turn not quite square and tried to turn on one of the axes the cube was liable to "explode"! Think my "best ever" time was just under 50secs and I used to take an average over 4 or 5 runs aiming for ~1:30!

I followed the Petrus method at lar5.com/cube/

It doesn't build the cube by layers, but rather starts at a corner and builds outwards. I found it much more intuitive. After about 2 weeks, I could do it in c. 60 secs.

It's also worth searching youtube for "speedcubing". The guys who do it blindfolded are AMAZING.

thanks

I'm a bit rusty now but I used to be able to solve the cube in around sixty seconds or less using the layers method. I'll have a look at the Petrus method though as it sounds fascinating.

You'd be better off getting a DIY type A cube from China off eBay. You can't really speedcube with one of these. For greater than 3x3x3 you look for Eastsheens and V-Cubes.

My best was 30s. F2L > Petrus imo.

I'm buying one of these!!

5x5x5 is really quite easy. The 6x6x6s are more fun than ether them or the 7x7x7s really because of the parity conditions.

might get one but nothing frustrates me more than when it wont turn the way you want it to and ypu loose your concentration and get frustrated

I got one of these when they originally came out and spent days, weeks, months trying to do it and never finished it!!!!!
None of my friends could do it @ the time,so I still didn't see it being done or explained.
No internet then,so couldn't watch it being done or even be told the theory behind the best way to progress?
Time to catch up and prove "The Meaning of Life"!

Not voting hot or cold but I don't think these cubes are worth buying. The cheap cubes and the "original cubes" are pretty slow and degrade quickly. spraying wd40 or using vaseline provides temporary speed but it starts to eat at the plastic.

I had two cheap cubes like the one the op posted. I wished I had just avoided them altogether and bought the one I am currently using which has worked perfectly for a long time. I don't think its very easy to bring your times down using cheap cubes. This is the one I currently use, for only double the price. (£11.99) If you are hoping to learn cubing buy the £11.99 one.
