is it any good?
So it amplifies the 2.4GHz band but not 5GHz.

No use to me but I can see how it might help others.
I bought it from xiaomi store when i had a trip to china last month, I am using it to connect & extend the "BTWifi-With-FON" for my house, works fine. you must download their app (Mi Home) to set up the dongle, quite easy tho.

Do you know which version it was, wondering if I can buy Chinese version and then install English app
"amplifier" as in "repeater"?

I don't think there is any difference in term of its functionality, there are Chinese printing on its package for mine, but if u download the English version of mi home app from App Store, then there isn't any Chinese during the setup.

I played with the app a bit and found out it is like a central control for almost all the xiaomi devices, very useful, I also use the it for my xiaomi vacuum robot, my neighbour bought a £700 dyson. Mine cost around £180, both have laser measuring & map planning and work out similar ways, done the same good job. I am quite impressed by xiaomi's technology, not sure about its durability tho.

Does it use the same password as the main router?
So if I buy 2, will they act like a mesh?

Kinda, if you connect them both to the router (rather than one to the other).

Remember Wireless is half-duplex (i.e. it can send and receive, but can't do both at the same time -- unless you get MIMO, but this doesn't support that).
So if the repeater has a bandwidth of 10MBit/sec, it will use 5Mbit/sec to download it from the router, then 5Mbit/sec to send it on to your device -- it will effectively half the available bandwidth. Couple that with the fact people put extenders on the edge/fringe of their network where they will get slow speeds to your router anyway - and that gets halved again!
So then you could put the extender closer... but then you have stronger signal and therefore don't need the extender...

So, they're not the grand solution. They might be ok for an iPad to work in the garden, but I wouldn't recommend for anything more than this.
