On the original firmware, when a microSD card is inserted the camera will look for a file called "snx_autorun.sh" in the root of the microSD card and run it if found.
So if you create a file called "snx_autorun.sh" in the root directory of your microSD card containing the following bash script, and insert it into the camera, the script will change the root password to "toor" (or whatever alternative you choose by editing the below) and start a telnet server:
#!/bin/sh
# Set root password
ROOT_PASS=toor
###
# Change root pasword
echo "Changing root password" > /dev/console
echo -e "${ROOT_PASS}\n${ROOT_PASS}\n" | passwd
# Launch telnetd
echo "Start telnet server..." > /dev/console
telnetd &
You'll then be able to connect to the camera over telnet using Putty with username "root" and password "toor" (unless you changed it in the above script). You can find the camera's IP in the Mi Home app.
Next step is to try to get some useful services running. It already has a simple web server running (albeit with no pages to serve), but I'm keen to get an rtsp stream out of the thing if possible.
Let me know if the above works for you and you can telnet into your camera.

That means that we can remove the portion of snx_autorun.sh that changes the root password, leaving just the following:
#!/bin/sh
# Launch telnetd
echo "Start telnet server..." > /dev/console
telnetd &
Once you insert the microSD card with the above script in the root folder and hear the double beep, you should be able to telnet into the camera using user/pass: root/ismart12.
I'm continuing to explore getting an rtsp feed and ftp server running. The cameras come with a very simple web server that serves pages out of /tmp/www, which should help.
So you can make a youtube video translating for the rest of us right?

If you actually understand that and can reliably firewall them off from the internet, and monitor access, go ahead... But these just aren't safe for consumers.

In an 100% efficient system: 16.7h, in a real system 2/3 of that roughly.

Tried it and it shows $25.99 at the checkout $22.09 after the discount code. PayPal converts this into GBP and shows £18.49. Not sure if you actually ordered one yourself!
You raise a legitimate issue.
However, aren't most of the problems associated with Wifi Cameras the fact that people don't secure it properly when setting it up and don't change the default passwords etc?

Thanks, according to a comment in that review posted 8 hours ago, the app apparently got a recent update giving more of a 'full English' language setting rather than half English half Chinese.
I have. The initial set up routine is different - Xiaomi does it by creating a QR code that you show to the camera to get it onto WiFi and associated with your Mi account. iSmartAlarm appears to try to use Bluetooth to communicate with the camera, and doesn't recognise the Xiaomi. As I say, suspect this is simply a firmware difference since there are plenty of clues that the Xiaomi is made by iSmartAlarm.
support ur local botnet imho.
app only
I'll see what I can do! :P

In terms of size and design, this one is by far the nicest of the cameras I have had. It only lacks the motors to reposition but I don't need those and I doubt most people really do. Do you know if you can turn off the night sensor and IR lights?
If anyone does want one with motors, I have tried the Sricam SP012, Digoo BB-M1 and Digoo BB-M2 (all 720P, not 1080P unfortunately). Of these I recommend the Digoo BB-M2 easily, they are all similar quality cameras in terms of build and video quality, but I found the BB-M2 takes the edge in terms of the native app, functionality (this is the only one you can turn off the night sensor and IR lights, plus it has some other added functions in the app), and ability to function with tinyCam Pro on Android.
I don't have this but I have the small ants camera which by xiaomi.. I too was having trouble connecting what I found out is that it didn't work with 5gz networks.. Try connecting it to a 2.5ghz. Some routers omit dual bands on same ID go in to the settings and split them...
The price is now £24 anyway, but you could get it from Banggood (link), Lightinthebox (link) or Fasttech (link), all for more or less the same price of £24. Just have to watch for discount codes if you want it for under £20.
That's strange, yes lowercase is correct. I had some issues with the formatting of the .sh file when I created it on my Windows PC. Try downloading it from here straight to your SD card. This only includes the telnetd portion of the script, so won't change the root password. Also, telnetd seems to die on my camera after a while, but I can always connect shortly after the double beep.
Let me know how you get on.
For those interested in my progress creating an rtp/rtsp stream/server, see here: github.com/fri…118
Hi mate thank for sharing this! Will probably get it now
Checked it now.. Still shows in stock hopefully you'll get one!
Cheers, managed to get one this time. £22.39 with the discount code.
You can turn off the IR on the app.
I think you scrolled down too fast and skipped the English bit!
