yet again - made in India - not in Kirkwall...

what makes you say that - the blurb says - This pendant catches your eye with its highly polished sterling silver and black enamel. The leaf shaped pendant comes with an 18" chain and is delivered in a plush gift box so could be a perfect present for a loved one. Ortak Jewellery has been making beautiful jewellery since 1967 when Malcolm Gray took the plunge and started making jewellery as a business venture rather than just a hobby. He started in the garden shed but through the years the expansion of the company has led to the custom built factory at Hatston in the Royal and Ancient Burgh of Kirkwall where the traditional skills of the silversmith, handed down over decades, are still in use. In the past few years Ortak has promoted the brand through celebrities and is proud to say that Carol Smillie and her daughter Christie Knight are the current 'faces' of Ortak and follow an impressive line-up including Suzanne Shaw, Myleen Klass, Kate Ford, Amanda Lamb and Gill Halfpenny.

There used to be tours through the silversmithing rooms at Hatston. i remember going a couple of times in the 70's and early 80s and remember it as quite small, but the factory part hasn't grown since then so I very much doubt they are making all their range there.

a fair price but not a hot deal.

Maybe worth their current asking price, never worth the claimed RRP.

Due to tiny amounts of silver involved no hallmarking necessary so nothing more than dress jewelery.

i disagree - i have a few pieces and its lovely stuff. Much nicer than dress jewellery. It is pretty, doesn't tarnish, doesn't make my neck or wrist go green and is really pretty.

I think this is a great price for a quality product.

And compared to Pandora, Troll etc prices - its a bargain !
It's your right to disagree but my opinion is equally valid.

I'd liken it to the many postings of 'Police' etc watches. Silly RRP's to suggest the sale prices are a bargain when in reality they're not. I suspect this jewelery falls into this category and will be available on Amazon at discounted prices for as long as its available.

Is there anywhere other than Amazon and Argos that sell it?

they have their own shops. I bought my first purchase in Scotland, and loved it. Others have been gifts and some other si have treated myself too. They are really nice pieces of jewellery. Certainly the ones i have are very well made and have lasted over time very well. I wouldn't have to think twice about buying from them again.

This is the Ortak site - ortak.co.uk/

Each purchase comes with a lifetime guarantee.

i also posted this on mse - and someone there has said ..........

I couldn't find anything that shows it isn't made in Kirkwall and have personally never heard anything about it being made elsewhere, and I live in Orkney.
But their jewellery is beautiful and excellent quality and well worth it at that price.

Once again, this is my exact point - there is nothing on the website to suggest it isn't all made in Orkney. However, as the MD of Ortak has pointed out -

"We do outsource some volume silver contemporary designs to an established family run silver producer in Thailand."

I think this could be described as deception by omission...

so Thailand or India ? I know no more than you - and can only be led by the website and the person who lives on Orkney where it is made - but all that aside - its still lovely jewellery - very well made - and well worth the money in my humble opinion.

Just to help everyone i have added the whole copy of the reply from the MD of Ortak to your post on mse when i posted it there rather than a small part ............

Hi

Thought I should set the record straight! Ortak does not have any jewellery made in India. We are proud to still design and manufacture jewellery in Orkney. All our traditional silver and gold designs and hot glass enamel pieces are made in Orkney. You are most welcome to come and visit our workshops and see the jewellery being made. We do outsource some volume silver contemporary designs to an established family run silver producer in Thailand. These designs are all designed by our in-house design team in Scotland.

and just to reiterate -

"We do outsource some volume silver contemporary designs to an established family run silver producer in Thailand" That'll be most of the product range then?. In fact I'll email the MD myself and find out exactly which items ARE made in Scotland.

I prefer honest companies who have a transparent approach to their manufacturing in Asia...

There's a whole host of other companies selling almost identical products but they aren't trying to create a brand centred around "Made in Scotland".

If people want to pay a premium for handmade Scottish jewellery - Ortak should state which products are actually made in Kirkwall. Surely that would be the honourable thing to do?

that doesn't stop this being a great product for the price - i don't buy it because its made in Scotland - i buy it because its lovely jewellery - far bette rin my opinion than some other things that ar emuch dearer.

I have never had anything break, tarnish or look dated - much better than cheap HSamuels stuff and a simialr price - infact, these ar emuch cheaper.
