The Outer Worlds is a new single-player first-person sci-fi RPG from Obsidian Entertainment and Private Division.

Lost in transit while on a colonist ship bound for the furthest edge of the galaxy, you awake decades later only to find yourself in the midst of a deep conspiracy threatening to destroy the Halcyon colony. As you explore the furthest reaches of space and encounter various factions, all vying for power, the character you decide to become will determine how this player-driven story unfolds. In the corporate equation for the colony, you are the unplanned variable.

  • The player-driven story RPG: In keeping with the Obsidian tradition, how you approach The Outer Worlds is up to you. Your choices affect not only the way the story develops; but your character build, companion stories, and end game scenarios.
  • You can be flawed, in a good way: New to The Outer Worlds is the idea of flaws. A compelling hero is made by the flaws they carry with them. While playing The Outer Worlds, the game tracks your experience to find what you aren't particularly good at. Keep getting attacked by Raptidons? Taking the Raptiphobia flaw gives you a debuff when confronting the vicious creatures, but rewards you with an additional character perk immediately. This optional approach to the game helps you build the character you want while exploring Halcyon.
  • Lead your companions: During your journey through the furthest colony, you will meet a host of characters who will want to join your crew. Armed with unique abilities, these companions all have their own missions, motivations, and ideals. It's up to you to help them achieve their goals, or turn them to your own ends.
  • Explore the corporate colony: Halcyon is a colony at the edge of the galaxy owned and operated by a corporate board. They control everything... except for the alien monsters left behind when the terraforming of the colony’s two planets didn’t exactly go according to plan. Find your ship, build your crew, and explore the settlements, space stations, and other intriguing locations throughout Halcyon.

Console: £7.99
Ultimate (PC, Console And Xbox Live): £10.99

I didn't go in with any expectations nor did I think I'd take to this game. But it's genuinely one of the best titles I've played in a while.

What's sad is that it does a lot of things right and shows how a videogame should be made; it's on a standard that very few games are achieving - it makes me feel like the videogame industry has screwed up big time as of late.

There's no micro-transactions, just a quality story-driven adventure space-opera with side-quests and combat. It's not broken either; the day one release is a finished product and I played through with no issues.

I have only one frustration. The main story is so damn short; I finished it in a couple of days. I didn't do much of the side-questing at all - there's tons of replay value and stuff to do in this game; but if you hit the main story and speed through the main objectives it's over very quickly.

It was £1 for me to re-subscribe and I was subscribed during E3 and cancelled.
Pay £36.74 once and keep game forever. I understand game pass but maybe I don't want to subscribe to keep my games

If you used rental services in the past, you'll know Game Pass makes more sense then to buying latest games for near RRP. In fact it's arguably better as you get instant access to a large library.

I reckon due to it's single player nature, The Outer Worlds will be in a sale within the year for 50% or so off so you can just get it to keep then and it'll work out cheaper.
Thanks OP! Heard a lot of good things about this game so I've wanted to try it.

It's up to individuals who will know what sort of use they get out of games, but it's worth mentioning given a lot of people will likely complete the game in the space of a month and rarely, if ever, touch it again
Edited by: "SpectreFace" 28th Oct
Great game - thoroughly enjoying it. But as above, can't see it taking more than a month to complete even if, like me, you delve into side quests. I'm happy to play it under GamePass.

TBH I'd disagree - yes it's very polished in game play (generally) but it's a bit of a technical mess. The chromatic aberration, AA and pop up problems are, frankly, horrible on the PC. The good news is that this can be fixed - find the config ini files (AppData\Local\Indiana\Saved\Config\WindowsNoEditor) on your PC and edit them thus:

Game.ini:

[/Script/EngineSettings.GeneralProjectSettings]
ProjectVersion=1.1.0.351
Configuration=Rel

This will fix most of what's wrong in the game and also it will remove the startup movies for you. Note that you should set up the game first via the menus, quit the game and only then edit the files. When done make them read only to stop them being overwritten by the game. The net result is the game looks so much better (super sharp) and the pop is gone. Adjust foliage.LODDIstanceScale *down* if the performance hit is too high for your PC. I'm on a 2080ti so I can't judge it for you.
Really enjoying this game!
Voting hot for the game, but wanted to vote cold for having to use Epic Games :/
Class Game. Great price too. Heat Added.
Good game. As others have said... If you can, GamePass is the best choice for this. Just finished it doing all the side/faction/companion quests in under 40 hours. Reading everything and talking to everyone. Potentially good replayability, but I don't think anyone will be playing it for more than a month.

My play through on PC was mostly fine. I did have some crashes that turned out to be down to me using cheat engine.

When I ditched that the game was stable and ran without a hitch for hours on end.

I've heard other people mention the chromatic aberration; I also saw an ini patch on nexusmods. I think it's partially taste but I could be wrong. I didn't mind the rainbow edges and figured it was a aesthetic choice (?) - the game is pretty vibrant.

I was just relieved the game didn't make me "simulator sick". I've had some first-person titles which are awful in that regard. I had to tweak Dying Light a lot before I could just about barely play it without feeling like I was about to chunder my guts out.

The boot logos... I don't know why they don't add an option for them in games. I tend to have to patch them out of most games nowadays.

I'm looking forward to mods for this game. It seems very moddable but time will tell.
Edited by: "schmoog" 30th Oct
I'm 10 hours into the game and only on my 3rd planet (Monarch) but I just love exploring! The aesthetic reminds me of fallout but with better system for killing people. Music reminds me of Borderlands and a bit of Bioshock Infinite too in the advertising around the place.

Thankyou gamepass for having this day one!
Erm... im playing it free on Windows 10 through game pass. So far great game!
Haven’t played this yet but every review I’ve seen is praising this game.

Try the above - the heavy FXAA without sharpening turns everything into a blurry mess and the popup it's absolutely horrendous in this game. I spent some time reading around an experimenting and I'm really happy with the result - it's soooo much nicer and the game looks lovely. Tinker away
It's a single player game, a new IP and it's on Game Pass.

This will drop significantly in price on PC and honestly my biting point might be £20 if I didn't want game pass.

Paid £1 for UGP upgrade and now have UGP until Nov 2021, plus reap £5 a month easy with MS rewards and will have accumiltaed over £120 by the time GP runs out, get to keep the other £35.74 happly in my wallet, so i will have completed this game a few times and any many many many many many many many many many more launch games and not even have scratched my UGP sub as at this point MS are paying you to play their on their Xbox/W10 system, and who am i not to take their rewards.

Of course. But the £1 game pass is still worth it - if for nothing else, just to see if you like the game before you buy it. Plus, you get to try out all the other games on the pass too. I'm currently playing The Outer Worlds on the game pass, but I'm still planning to buy it outright as soon as it goes on sale.
Only played a short amount of it due to it coming out on the same day as cod, but my goodness it's good.

Or use the Game Pass version for now and buy it for < £10 in about 6 months if you really want a permanent license for it.
Ironically I had just started Fallout: New Vegas when I heard about this and given that I've got GamePass until February I thought I'd give it a go. Its very good indeed.

Sounds perfect then. As soon as I've finished shadow of war I'll be on this next.
Did this in about 15 hours (completed almost all side quests). Great game but just a shame it's so short. Not interested in the hard difficulty.

Worth it for the £1 on gamepass but wouldn't spend the full £35± price.

Does the Xbox version have these technical problems, as it's more convenient for me to play it on that but obviously I can't edit the ini files? If all these issues are present on the Xbox I'll just wait until I'm not using my PC for work so much, as I've got a Win10 partition that I use for gaming on my TV with my Xbox 360 controller.

I haven't seen any problems on xbox. PC games always seem to have problems so I stick to consoles.
Or just pay Microsoft a quid for a months rental
Nobody else find the text size stupidly small?

Playing on the Xbox on a 50 inch 4k TV I have to get up off the sofa just to read the dialogue and see no way of increasing text size. Really hate it when games are made this way, same thing happened with mass effect Andromeda I gave it up after a few hours
