If you want a new account, with the Outlook.com feel, sign-up for a new account at Outlook.com.

If you want to use your existing @hotmail.com or @live.co.uk account, just login with that account at Outlook.com

If you want to change your existing @hotmail.com or @live.co.uk account to an @outlook.com account (which means you'll need to use @outlook.com to login everywhere), use 'Rename'.

If you want to use your existing @hotmail.com or @live.co.uk account AND gain a subsidiary @outlook.com address which will appear in your @hotmail.com or @live.co.uk account, use 'Create Alias'.

Thanks, was worth getting my name before someone else gets it, just have to remember to log in every 270days to keep it active.

I set up an auto forward to everything gets sent to my gmail, I've sent a couple of test emails and it doesn't seem to be working, Anyone else tried this?

I had to verify my account by giving them my phone number before it would send - they give you 1 chance to get the letter/number sequence right to verify, then tells you you have made too many attempts and need to enter a phone number to receive a text for verification - bit of a scam to get your mobile number I think, click on the audio verification for a laugh - no human in the planet could understand the garble it's saying.

That was not my experience at all, you don't have to give them your phone number but they do need two difference pieces of information from you. I used postcode and first teachers name (you need to click a button to get to these options). As for entering the numbers and letters thing correctly... I entered it wrong a few times but it still let me try again, maybe they have received too many failed attempts from your IP group something. My experience was that signing up was very easy, only thing I would change would be to let you know if the username was available after you type it in, at the minute they don't let you know until the end.

temporary problem
gonna try again later

signed up 2 accounts in under 5 mins, v easy no phone numbers were needed

You can use your CURRENT hotmail account.
If you don't like it , you can change back.
Much less advertising on outlook!!

Does anyone know how to set up POP account information for iphone?

Just a warning, if you are signed into hotmail and go to Outlook.com it automatically changes to it. Therefore sign out first and decide if you want to change to a completely new UI, also if you don't want loads of ads on the right you will need an ad blocker on your browser.

Banned

but it uses your existing windows live id anyway so no need to rush unless you dont have one of these

dont really see the point of it tbh as its just a front end for gmail & facebook

Managed to get a single letter and a double letter address :P

If you do that won't you get more spam e-mails though??? Does anyone know if that's a big factor; whether having a short e-mail like three characters long contributes to getting more spam e-mails?

Thanks,

If you log in with hotmail and don't like it.
You can revert back.
It's in settings.

Thanks op!

Man I should have read this more. Now my sign in for everything live (including XBox Live) appears to have changed. Any way to cancel and revert back to as it was? The "Switch back to hotmail" link doesn't revert your account.

is this better than gmail?

i dont understand what this is?

What a load of toss!

I didn't realise it would rename my entire live account over and now my old hotmail.com account isn't working and so can't receive any mail sent to that address.

They need to compete with g mail.
Clean ad free , this is the way forward.

Except it CLEARLY isn't just a front-end for Gmail, as you get assigned your own email address and can use it as a normal webmail account... (The point of this thread being to alert people to this so they can claim their name before somebody else does). Which would make it an alternative to Gmail. And I think it's fairly obvious what the point of Microsoft having their own email product is!

Read the article linked in my email, its ad supported and as can be seen on my first picture the ads take up a lot of the screen space

It might be too late for some...
You don't have to create a new account to reserve your name. Just login to outlook.com with your old live account and go to settings and click on "create alias" NOT rename!!!!
From there you can create a few alias for you old account and start giving out you new alias [email protected]outlook.com mail address

Account reserved. Got in before the git that has beat me to gmail, yahoo, facebook etc

I would be careful upgrading ya hotmail to this...

Currently I have no old hotmail email address working. It's change Live IDs for everything including XBLive, Windows Live Messenger is screwed and just shows everyone Offline when they are not.

Hoping it sorts itself out but at the moment it's messed so much stuff up that I wish I hadn't bothered!

my address is gone already, oh well just keep with my trusty hotmail.com one.

Did you sign-in to Outlook.com with your existing Hotmail account, or did you sign-up to Outlook.com making a new, separate e-mail address and account???

Saw this from El-Reg earlier but didn't cotton on to getting my name first on there! Cheers OP

I upgraded my hotmail account to outlook one. It was supposed to keep my old email address and direct it to the new one. Didn't realise it was going to completely change my live ID. It's now broken just about everything. Mesh won't sign in at all, Messengers still screwed and old email address is no more.

just incase people didint know. if you dont like the new look and want to go back to hotmail look for now you can click on the little cog at the top and you can switch back to hotmail ^^

Only switches the look back not ya ID. Won't help me.

Cold because while Outlook.com is great, the stupid post is making everyone go stupid.

If you want a new account, with the Outlook.com feel, sign up for a new account at Outlook.com.

If you want to use your existing @hotmail.com or @live.co.uk account, with the Outlook.com feel, just log on with your account at Outlook.com

If you want to permanently change your existing @hotmail.com or @live.co.uk email address to an @outlook.com account (which means you'll need to use @outlook.com to log on everywhere, regardless of whether it looks new or classic), use 'Rename'.

Unfortunately it looks as if you won't be able to access your old Hotmail account at the moment.
Hopefully though they will come up with a fix.

I've tried to look for some help for you and this is all I can find, Microsoft employees should be able to help on that froum. Good Luck!

Thanks for looking. It does look like a lot of others are having issues. I'll be a lot more happy when Live Messenger returns to working order for me as I only got mostly spam to that old hotmail address anyway so can probably live with it being wiped out.

Why would I need yet another account? Gmail works perfectly fine for me. Cold.

Wow..looks much nicer then the hideous Gmail on my netbook.

If only this was posted earlier. I saw this post after re-creating all my email addresses. If I try to rename the old accounts now, it says address already taken.

What's the solution to this?

Edited by: "badzed" 1st Aug 2012

I signed up for a new outlook.com account then linked my old hotmail.com account to it. So they act as seperate mail accounts but can easily switch between the two by clicking a button at the top when logged in

Good idea although too late for me. I have just accepted I have lost my old email address but then it was 99% spam to it anyway so not the end of the world.

Just need Messenger back and I will move on.
