For a literary work, copyright expires 70 years after the death of an author in both the US and UK. I think you are safe - Jane Austens heirs will not come after you!

There's a separate Project Gutenberg list for Europe I think, plus if you search the books on the US site it will tell you if you are not permitted to download/distribute outside of the US. E.g.: gutenberg.org/ebo…/16

any half decent reads on here or older stuff that isnt popular anymore?

You could have simply searched google for copyright terms for both countries

The project has been going on for years now, it just keeps getting better and better IMHO.
I did a search to see if it had been posted before and didn't see it, so I thought with it coming up to Christmas, and people getting Kindles, Android devices or Apple devices it would be worth mentioning.

Cheers

They are all a bit old though. Fine if you want Jane Austin and the like.

Does anyone know of any free sites that do recent books?

Depends what you mean by recent:

How to analyze people on sight (2009)

Why not browser around or use the search functionality?

I was thinking more along the lines of crime novels. ie Patricia Cornwell type books or Dean Koontz, Michael Chrichton, Tom Clancy.

thanks

Did you read the front page of the link? A few sentances down:

I doubt books by these authors are public domain, and will be under copyright by their publishers. You'd have to buy their ebooks from somewhere like Amazon.
