"Oz" + "Breaking Bad" are my two favourate tv shows. I hope Breaking Bad season 4 is out soon.

anyone got THE WIRE box set? whats that programme like compared to OZ ?

This is one of them shows like The Sopranos & The wire where you can go back to it a year later and happily watch it back to back again. I never tire of Oz.

The wire has got quite a few actors you will see in Oz. Kenny just seems to be the same character as Brody. The Wire is better of the two I would say.

was THE WIRE made after OZ then

Oz started off as a brilliant series, although it is quite bleak and brutal. My gf didn't like the levels of violence in it, but on the other hand she loves the Sopranos so that tells you how bad it is.

As the series progressed it declined, by series 4 the character turnover was unreal, characters introduced only to be killed off in the same episode.

Still worth watching for the first few series alone, not much else out there like it

Poet - legendary character - his raps were unreal!

seen it at this price before so not that great a price for me

Wire was mad after, personally i enjoyed both - watched Wire first, loved it, there are moment in Oz that possibly are better/grittier but I think The Wire was a better show overall but that doesn't mean Oz is not worth a look - I loved it bar one or two moments where it did go over the top / stretch the boundaries of believability (sp?) but for £50 its worth a look for certain.

Loads of people pop up from The Wire throughout the series as well and its fun seeing the difference in character types they portray as well. If you enjoyed the Wire I would be surprised if you didn't enjoy this.

i think that once adebisi left in series 4, it started going downhill

I like them equally. They are two of my favorite TV series of all time. I used to stay up all sorts of late hours when OZ first came out on channel 4. I always said to myself I would tape it, but always ended up riveted and watching it until the end. The acting and character development is superb and so are the plots and many sub plots. Its delivered in a unique way not only for a prison drama, but for any drama period. At the time many of the papers were calling it one of the best shows not have been watched on tv and was regularly put in the do not miss sections. It might look slightly dated next to The Wire, and thats maybe why some might prefer it, but they are really are as good as each other. The Shield and Deadwood are my favs as well. Brotherhood which was canceled after 3 seasons and Intelligence (Canadian series) cancelled after two seasons, are also well worth the watch if you are able to see them. They are all in a league of their own.

If your thinking of buying this do it superb series youll want to watch episode after episode serious insomnia inducing show

Great summary. Thanks I will check out Intelligence. Have you ever heard of The Black Donnellys? If your into wire/shield/sopranos then I would recommend it. It only ran for 1 season but its still worth getting into.

This is when America discovered real actoring talent, the depth of OZ and script writing is beyond any current shows now in production. Its problarly of the finest and directed TV Series of any generation.

Funny that you should mention the Black Donnellys, I only discovered that a few weeks ago, shall we say on one of the many generous internet sites. I got half way through watching the first season, not realizing how old it was, and thought to myself I am starting to enjoy this a little too much, let me go and check wiki to see if I am going to be really dissapointed. Sure enough one season then cancelled. Gutted. I do not watch programmes like NCIS , CSI Cold Case etc, they do nothing for me, and this is because of the programmes mentioned. Too me its loke the difference between Harrods and Poundland or Burger King and a quality restaurant. You can count on one hand the programmes that I go out of my way to watch, at the moment.

I remember getting hit by a tin of peaches and taken up the back door by Adebisi, fun times.

Black Donnellys - Great show, Irish Sopranos-ish. Why oh why did they can it!?

Lol, some might call that peaches and cream!

In all seriousness this was a great show but the latter series got a little ridiculous the 'hole in the wall' storyline was frankly obsurd. It almost felt like season 4 onwards were written by teenagers who wanted characters introduced just to get killed off within about 10 minutes!

Still a very good series though, I watched it again recently and it is certainly not for the faint hearted. If you are squeamish about flowery language, homosexual relationships/sex, extreme male nudity (I am talking right up the schwinkter here), rape and violence then please keep away.

Brotherhood is Irish gangs and community as well. The acting is superb. They go into the shady backstabbing dealings of politics as well similar to the Wire, with violence just as brutal. It really was an amazing show which was highly rated and won awards, easily as good as the Sopranos. Alas only three seasons as mentioned, the last season a little rushed because of it. There are not too many shows that give me that sickly feeling, when the axe comes crashing down, but this was definitely one of them
