My first post, so apologies if I've made any mistakes.

I noticed in my local Asda this evening (Govan) that they are selling a pack of 10 energy saving lightbulbs - bayonet fitting, 11W - for £2. The brand is General Electric "Mini Eco". These normally sell for £1.99 per bulb, so it seems like an amazing deal!

The woman at the checkout said that it's a short-term special offer and that when they're gone, that's it.

Hope this helps someone. Sorry I've no picture, but the same bulbs are sold on the following website, here: energysaverlightbulbs.co.uk/ so maybe someone could insert a photo for me (I'm not sure how to do it!!).

That's a good deal.

Sainsbury's are currently doing 4 Osram energy saving bulbs (8 or 11W) for £1. Seem to be all bayonet fittings. Bought four last night - normally priced £2.09 each.

Really need some screw fitting bulbs though - they seem harder to come by (at deal prices, anyway!)

SirHugo

Seems they are trying to give these away... people must not be buying them

Got ten for 10p in tesaco the other day.

This is still a good deal though

Not as good as the Tesco deal at 1p each but still a fairly good deal just a pity that they are only 11w as I find these are very dull.

Probably because 8w & 11w are too dim. Some of them take ages to 'warm up' too. I've replaced mine with 20W as anything less made the room seem gloomy.

They were posted in this forum at 6p each in Morrisons less than two days ago. Ive searched high and low for the thread but cant find it. Can someone else help?

Same here, got 10 x GE 20w bulbs for 10p which pretty much give full brightness on switch on. Vote this warm.

The reason for all these price slashes is to do with government subsidies they will be paid for doing so. The more they sell the higher the payment

It's a tax thing. They get a tax rebate for undertaking 'green' initiatives.

It's the same reason power companies give away bulbs free, they get the money back.

who needs Bayonet fitting though? everything is screw fot nowadays, thats why they are all going cheap! if someone could point me in the right direction of a small screw 'amazing' deal then I would get excited:-D

My understanding is that there is new EU legislation coming in soon (1st April possibly). Currently low-energy bulbs have a lifetime of around 6000 hours where the new legislation states this should be 10,000 hours. Hence everyone is selling off bulbs cheaply to get rid of the old ones before the new legislation comes in.

Before we all go crazy with energy-saving, we should consider … Before we all go crazy with energy-saving, we should consider this:http://freestudents.blogspot.com/2007/04/annoyance-of-energy-efficient-lighbulbs.htmlMERCURY!

I've said it before, the levels of mercury are tiny- similar to the mercury in your fillings.

As for the american story, well that was admitted to as a classic over-reaction. Put a glove on to protect your hands as you do for an ordinary bulb and your fine.

Can anybody point me to any information suggesting that the U.K government is giving companies grants or money for selling these cheaper. I cannot see nor reading anything such as this.

Nice find, thanks!

out of stock in Pwllheli and Llangefni stores :x

I think that these are being sold off cheap as they are 6,000/8,000 hr bulbs. I think that there is going to be a law soon that they can only be a minimum of 10,000hrs lifetime which is why they are going cheap.

just bought a box of 10 it scanned @ £1.50 bargain!!!
