As the title says, I wanted a TZ5 but couldn't justify £193 for holiday snaps, next best price is £158 delivered from Camerabox. Touch screen as well, woo!!!

looks like a good alternative to the TZ5 although the FX500 can't zoom when recording.

Does it compress HD footage like the Casio cameras do ?

cheers, yeah i was going to put that in my description, I'm looking forward to testing out the quality, I was going to get the FS7 play.com deal, but I think for an extra £20 you get a load more features.

The TZ5 and FX500 are quite different cameras.

Something to consider before purchase: Panasonic is the only company which doesn't allow after market batteries. You will need to buy their replacement batteries at £50 a piece. Because of this, imo, it's not such a bargain.

My second concern is about a purchase fron Dabs.com/BTShop. They have no customer service to speak of and if anything goes wrong you will probably need to claim through your credit card (as I had to), so make sure you use one which has purchase protection.

I just checked ebay and there are load of aftermarket batteries for around £7, I never used the CS in dabs although I ordered from them a few times.

forgive my ignorance but ive done a quick search for DMC-FX500 Digital Camera Battery and found one for £10 delivered, obviously not a panasonic original, but won't it do the job.

i've never had any problems with dabs, buying from dabs was one of the reasons I bought it.

Panasonic changed their firmware which detects and disallows after market batteries. Read this:

panasonic.jp/sup…tml

Make sure your camera has NOT been updated to the latest firmware before your purchase. You will never be able to update to the latest firmware in future, so you wont get improvements in function unless you buy their batteries (for your safety, LOL).

As Dabs.com is concerned. If your sale goes through with no problems you are lucky. But if anything goes wrong you are f******d. It's like playing lottery, not worth it imo..

it records movies in quicktime format .mov files, so I think a bit of work might be needed to get them to play on my standalone dvd/divx player.

cheers for the info I'll have to look into that when the camera arrives.

I've got a Lumix fx07 and a fz7 I've found spare batteries for both very cheap. Battery life on both my camera's is very good too.

I won't repeat myself here. Just go to the Panasonic web site through the link in my message above. Even if your camera is not listed at the moment, Panasonic has confirmed to my enquiry that all models will be updated later this year.

The above link refers to updates only, not to new purchased cameras. Newly purchased cameras may already contain the latest firm ware which blogs 3rd party batteires.

cheers for the info again ... the FX500 is powered by a DMW-BCE10E battery which is not on that list, therefore is it correct to assume that they haven't upgraded the firmware, so at the moment you could buy an aftermarket battery for it no probs, just like u say never update the firmware.

glad to been made aware of this cos I would have updated the firmware straight away I think I'll be more cautious now.

sold by uk digital cameras, says they are original, looked on their website and they're £30 from them direct.

Just because they have the same name, i's not neccessarily the same company. For this price I doubt the batteries are are genuine Panasonic but you will only find out by trying.

I was contemplating the Panasonic G1 but after this battery business, I will stay away from any camera which doesn't use AA type batteries or at least allows for AA backup in a grip. If Panasonic gets away with this, other camera manufactors may follow with this battery protection. After all, the battery is the most important part of a digital camera, without nothing will work. AA batteries can be got in any corner shop at the most remote part in the world.

Now back in stock at dabs.com for £138.98 and don't forget quidco.

You had me going there for a moment - I read this as 'tz7' !

I think Panasonic only introduced this 'ID' battery thing along with the TZ6 and TZ7. I bought a TZ6 a couple of months ago (was nearly put off by the battery business), & bought a spare Inov8 branded battery – works fine, but still cost me an extortionate £30!
