i would rather get an ps3 which is much cheaper, and you can do more things than just watch movies.

I'm sure this is the bees knees in Blu-Ray players, but the PS3 is just a better bargain overall at half the price or less (I used my Virgin CC to get a PS3 + GTA4 for £270 in-store at Zavvi a few weeks back for example).

ok sarbjeet? but why rate it so cold - lots of people out there dont play games and would like a top of the range Blu Ray disc player. Just trying to find some deals for people but kind of pointless searching if it gets the cold reception as soon as its listed. i agree you might not like so by al means comment but the deal is still a good deal so please dont rate it as cold just because you have a preference for another way of viewing them.
Cheers

doesnt take a genius to answer that one they obviously didnt look hard i went on one website and found one for £199.99 play.com/Ele…tml

mmm. someone's missing the point. Of course there are cheaper brands and models etc but this is a top end of the market model for those people who like quality items that will last and give a good few years service. Oh well. No pleasing some people;-)

exactly, like comparing an smansung LCD to a pioneer plasma....oooh that will stir up some response im sure

The PS3 can output uncompressed audio via HDMI, so what's the problem here? I know the PS3 can't do every format of audio of course, so if you have some insane audio setup you might miss out, but otherwise you'll miss some "Dolby Digital FooBizzleShizzle" LED lighting up on your amp and no audible difference.

The PS3 is currently the audiovideophile player of choice. Quiet. Upgradeable firmware. Works. Also does Rock Band.

I don't agree. I have this combo. Would you care to elaborate? Are you referring to the lack of HD audio as bitstream from the PS3? This would be the only short coming which hopefully will be fixed by a firmware update, and is not the end of the world anyway.

As for this deal, if you want this specific player for some reason, it's a hot deal. Although there are newer players with better specifications out there now in my opinion. But thanks for posting, I am glad I get a chance to checkout bluray deals.

i have a samsung dvd player 1080p7, a budget dvd player which cost about £60, I also have a denon 1940 dvd player which cost about £220, the denon is miles better in picture quality to build quality....what im trying to say is that just because they are both blu ray players doesnt mean they are the same, quality comes at a price
for starters the noise from the ps3 would destroy any quiet moments in an experience (tho its nowhere near as bad as the xbox360)

so you are happy to settle for 2nd best then...just kidding....i would rather let the amp decode dts-hd than the ps3, otherwise its almost pointless buying the amp....for sound if you are using the ps3 for movies anyway...the difference is probably minimal tho

the ps3 dts-hd firmware update is on its way, but i would rather have the ps3 send it uncompressed so the amp you paid alot of money for can do its stuff

as for the deal, id wait till later this year when hopefully bluray 2.0 is out

Top quality HD-DVD players were much cheaper (even before the major studios pulled their backing from the format|).... so how come top quality buy-ray players are so expensive ? do the manufacturers actually not want to them to sell ??? this is way way overpriced.....

Simple answer - no analogue audio outs. If you haven't got an A/V amp which supports HDMI audio you're ******ed when it comes to getting high quality audio from Blu-Ray via a PS3. And quite honestly I don't think there is an videophile player of choice right now simply because the profile 2.0 isn't commonly available yet.

Problem with this deal is the Panasonic player is starting to look SERIOUSLY outdated. No HDMI 1.3 and no ethernet (from what I can see) and as it's been around for a while I'd assume it was profile 1.0, possibly 1.1 at best? Also, and I don't wish to be rude here, if you don't have a SERIOUS screen (basically 50 inch 1080p native or bigger, ideally a projector) you're going to struggle to spot any difference at all. IMHO of corse.

Of course, I would prefer my amp to decode Dolby TrueHD and DTS MA, although it's not pointless buying an amp at all. A stereo speaker TV certainly can't play back 5.1 lossless audio!

As the Onkyo 605 can receive LPCM audio over HDMI then I can still listen to lossless audio. Hopefully once Sonys profile 2.0 bluray players have been out for a while, sony will update the PS3 firmware to allow Dolby TrueHD and DTS Master Audio to be sent as bitstream.

NEWSFLASH: The ps3 has already recieved a firmware to enable it to decode DTS-MA (formerly known as DTS-HD) And it's current newest firmware revision is bluray 2.0 compliant too.

The PS3 is a good player due to the frequency of firmware updates.

Back on topic, as discussed this player is foefully out of date compared to newer releases, although I would not jump on the original poster, as this will only discourage people from posting deals. Thanks to all who contributed useful information

:-D I remember when Onkyo were considered a ****** brand. They were like Matsui, Alba Bush etc. Even the amps they sent to magazines to review would break down half way through testing.

Now people think they are the dogs gonads.

It's certainly not as well built as my old Pioneer. It does feel cheaper and more flimsy by comparison. I made the trade off for the features of the onkyo though.

onkyo amps are still a radio shack brand, yamaha or pioneer still rule but at £2,000+ so they should, my amp cost me £2700 like 7 years back, im getting RX-Z9 next at £2,600 no cheap onkyo for me

Well, what a surprise.....
A Blu-ray player being voted cold (even though it's a decent player and a good deal), just because it's not a ps3!

Not everyone wants that ugly piece of junk (and I'll probably get one soon anyway) under their TV.
Not everyone wants a ps3.
Not every movie fan wants to play games.
The original Xbox could play DVD's, but people still bought standalone DVD players (even though they may have been more expensive).

Just because a games console can play a particular type of media, it doesn't mean people should only buy that.

jus a bit pricey! ouch!

Doesn't make it a bad deal.....Just makes it expensive!
If a top model Audi A6 came on here with £10,000 knocked off the asking price, it would still be a good deal.
This player, albeit a bit old, is a bit higher up the scale than the £200 base model Samsung, so to find a place selling it at least 25% cheaper than most others, constitutes a good deal.

Wait another year or two and you will be able to buy these for £19.99

This is an excellent deal. There is no point in the product though as its seriously overpriced, a PS3 is one of the best blue ray players on the market based on product quality. Fair enough people may not want a games console to be their primary blue ray player, but the features on the ps3 and price makes a huge difference over his Panasonic player. Personally having used this Panasonic blue ray player, I have a few issues with it.
1. It takes a while to load up a blue ray film longer than a PS3 which takes 10 seconds.
2. Not 1.3 HDMI compliant
3. Produces the same amount of noise as a PS3.
3. Not really future proof especially since blue ray is a media format that is constantly improving.
4. Seriously overpriced.

The PS3 at the moment cannot be beaten as best standalone blue ray player. Its price is a huge factor at £299 RRP (can be had alot cheaper looking around on this site) people get alot of technology for there money as it's a Media Hub. Sony frequently provide firmware updates which improve both the gaming and blue ray features.

I can understand why people are voting this cold as there would be no point buying a standalone blue ray player for this price at the moment. Once the techonology hits its peak in a year or two, there will be several manufacturers producing blue ray players hence blue ray media/players will be seriously cheap. This panasonic player will be outdated within the next year or two.

I didn't vote on the deal, but in my opinion its a product not worth having.

I'm just rubbing my eyes to see the date of the thread :(, may be poor eyesight.

Panasonic DMP-BD30 costs £299 or less, which i thought a superior and new model. PS3 is profile 2.0 enabled and capable of sending DTS-MA track over HDMI with latest firmware update (april 25th?). DLNA certification on PS3 itself makes it as far superior, that means you can stream audio / video from any servers which are compatible.
