For anyone who was wondering, the 390 is apparently the well reviewed 400 but without Wi-Fi. (Not an issue unless you want to use the streaming features.)

Had a look online but unable to see if this model plays 3D? If it' not in the title does that mean it doesnt?

Does,”4K Ultra HD Upscaling” mean it isn’t a real 4K player

No. It means that it upscales non 4K content.

good price. Has 3D too from what I can see. Must be an older model as most new ones don't,

Are you sure that's the exact same model. Why would every review and every shop say it isn't lol.

The 390 is a currys exclusive model. They are also selling DMP-UB300 for £129. However, I've gone through all the specs on the Panasonic website and they look identical. Does anyone know if there's any difference? Usually store exclusive models have a slightly lower spec, but this one's baffling me.

Thanks

SirHugo

Update - just found a review and it looks like the 300 only has a single HDMI, whereas the 390 has two. Specs are incorrect on the Panny website.

Tempted.... But...

Now we have 4k streaming on sites like Amazon and Netflix etc.. Do we really need dics and disc players? Won't these just be obsolete soon? Thoughts?

Most comparisons between streaming 4K and Bluray 4k, seem to show that Bluray is 'vastly' superior quality. I've seen a few side by side reviews (online)_ and he iimage quality seems to confirm this. Streaming 4k requires much greater compression. You often won't get the full sound experience with streaming that a disc spinner gives DTS HD, Atmos etc etc.

It seems that this model is basically a DMP-400 without the wifi. Those two HDMI outs will save me about £1000 and are invaluable when you have an expensive AVR that doesn't pass through 4K visuals.

I've got one waiting for me in my local Currys.

Do I need a 4k TV to make use of this?

Yes you will

Bought today and it says 3D on the box. Haven't got a 3D to try though.

Not quite....but you won't see 4k (UHD) resolution if you only have an HD TV. It will still play normal Bluray and DVD. It might even play UHD and downscale to HD, but whats the point.

Incidentally, I picked it up on Friday and returned it on Sunday. I was surprised at how few UHD blurays are out there, but principally I got it for its ability to play UHD from a memory stick or via a DLNA/Plex server. It does this, but won't decode sound if the file is DTS-HD or DD Trued HD, (regardless of whether the file is HD or UHD).
