Well if you’re considering the 400, might I suggest the UB390eb that Currys are selling right now for £129. Internally, it’s the 400 minus WiFi (which suits me fine as I’m using Ethernet).
As for the 700 vs 400, I’m dubious about all of these reported picture differences in UHD disc players, partic. from review sites like What HiFi. Given that these are digital only players, they should all be the same, right?
I know that Panasonic do some chroma subsampling which, as I understand, is a method of accommodating for the compression in picture data on the disc, but it seems that the tech they use for this is consistent across the range - so Panasonic players must all be more or less the same bar perhaps in their smart functions(if anyone knows better, please feel free to correct me).

I have learned to avoid reviews for any of these players though. What HiFi, for instance have a review of LGs player and they complain about the sound being thin. It’s digital. It’s perfect or it’s absent. Similarly, the Oppo player that everyone’s raving about can’t be any better than a player like the one above. You just pay extra for the analogue outputs (and DAC) that no-one is using anyway.

Anyway, I digress. I’d say, if you’re just going to use this to play 4K movies off disc, I’d go 400/390.

The Xbox one S is certainly a contender. However, it does lack some of the finer picture management and only has one HDMI output, which is a bind if you use an amplifier for sound that isn’t 4K HDR ready
Got a One S terrible 4K player, poor software and picture in comparison, going through a Demonstration and Onkyo amp it would take 6-8 goes to get it to handshake properly and switch to 4K/24hz......took the plunge and got the 700 a while back, it just works......picture quality amazing and crystal sound, can't compare to other players, but HOT for the price!!
