What format are the video files?
I'm sure i read somewhere that the files aren't recognised by windows.

It's mpeg 2, nearly every windows video editing suite can edit these or if not free convertors can sort that.

Plus it comes with a video editing suite anyway which can output to whatver format you need

As regards the file format, the full HD is .MOD format, MPEG2 is normal SD resolution

Is the HDC-SD40 the non-Currys version?

This refers to mpeg-4 and AVCHD standard compliant if that means anything to anyone:
