Good price! Thanks
Any good deals on the new one?

Thanks
This phone is quite big and chunky compared to my old 3 year old camera, I thought technology was getting smaller?
I'm guessing you aren't comparing it to similar technology. They pack a heap or features into these camera. Got a tz10 and its got plenty to do on it!
Not sure how different the tz18 is but that's £129.99 on Amazon.

This is not the smallest camera, there are smaller ones. But I doubt they have such a good lens or a 16x optical zoom. The Panasonic Lumix TZ range is about a balance between portability and quality photography. I'm not a professional photographer by any means, but I have been very happy with the photos taken with my TZ8, and the various settings are very powerful and do let me capture shots which I just couldn't on my smaller Casio Exilim camera.

Great camera.
Is the picture quality any good? I heard that the TZ-18 with a CMOS sensor was actually a step back compared to the previous version. Especially the low light performance was pretty bad.

Don't think it makes phone calls.....good but not that good

The main selling point is zoom and video not image quality.

Great price for a camera of this quality.

The three most important things when choosing a camera?

1. The lens
2. The lens
3. THE LENS

...and for 130 squids this a decent lens. the TZ range is generally well thought of, though it's Achilles' heel is it's performance in low light. The lens is very good giving a very usable range from wide angle 24mm (equivalent) to just short of 400mm a great travel camera (which was the design brief) though remember that this is a year old now and I suspect a new model is in the wings? With the slight advisory about low light performance I think you'd struggle to find better value at £130.

Heat +
The older TZ10 and TZ8 perform better, especially in low light, if you can still find them.
Zoom lens is longer on this : it's an amazing camera for £129. Heat.
Why this is getting heat and mine on IXUS 310 is cold being the same price?
Are camera technicalities being forgotten during voting? CCD vs CMOS? f/3.2 vs f/2.0? More zoom but of no use?
Decent price (I got a TZ20, its big brother for not much more though before Christmas), fine for casual photography, quite responsive, with a good feature set but not for pixel peepers!

It seems that the newer version of this camera is slightly better, although still not excellent as the sensor remains quite noisy and as jpeg artefacts are still quite visible even at low ISOs.

The TZ20 is a big improvement over this I believe (different sensor technology).

I think the only difference is the TZ19 has a stero mic for video recording (and hence uses a different bulkier format); but i may be wrong...
These days compacts just don't cut it for anything except holiday snaps imo. A hybrid GF3 for example will spank this ones bottom in every situation, doesn't cost that much more in the scheme of things, only trouble is if you need a decent zoom.

But why would you need an 18x zoom for crap photos?

Because most compact cameras can take equally pleasing photos given the right conditions; certainly at the resolution most will be displayed a little noise (ore even a lot) in the images will never show.
When you can buy your GF3 with a wide and 16x lens for £130 then these deals will get cold votes; personally I'd rather carry one of these on holiday than a camera and a bag of lenses.
This camera for that price... smokin hot! I know what I am talking about as my girfriend has the sam camera and I can tell you, the picture quality, video quality and speed (from turn on to ready to use state) is almost unbeatable. Besides, 16x optical zoom...

The lens on this camera certainly has a long zoom rage but there's many other aspects to a lens which are a matter of balance, this lens is optically slow and has a very small sensor to allow the large zoom range to be squeezed in which means poorer image quality. Also there's a lot more to a camera than just the lens, it's not the only factor as your post implies particularly with digital software corrections, the sensor is very important which is the weakest part of this camera.

The replacement model, the TZ30 and derivatives are already out but there's a hefty price premium for them which is likely to quickly disappear if previous models are anything to go by.

I agree the compact mirrorless cameras like the GF3 and the TZ's are very different cameras but disagree strongly about the noise not being visible at normal resolutions, the number one complaint I always see about these cameras is the poor low light performance. It's not so much high iso it's bad at, even at the base iso there's visible noise which increases rapidly as iso is increased leading to very soft, noisy pictures even in what seems like moderate light. However any large sensor cameras are not going to be able to offer a compact zoom range so it's up to the user which is more useful to them.

My TZ7 just broke last week. The video and sound was awesome on this thing. A great concert camera for YouTubing bands.

How do the versions that followed my one (TZ7) compare?

Is this (TZ19) the same quality video + sound?

You really don't understand, do you.:(
May be back in stock - showing stock for me.

The TZ19 is the DSG-only hybrid of the TZ18 and TZ20, which are now being replaced by the TZ25 and TZ30 respectively. The TZ18/19/20 have been reported as having slightly inferior image quality to their predecessors (now corrected on the latest new models) but the TZ series remains one of the best travel zoom series out there and this is a GREAT price. The best I've seen on the TZ30 so far is a touch under £300, though it's bound to fall later in the year as they all do.

Lots of irrelevant comment in this thread already. Of course it has compromises (like every camera at any price does) but for what it's designed for (excellent though not professional quality pictures through an amazing compact zoom lens) it's close to unbeatable. It is a touch bigger than real 'compacts', but still easily pocketable. Comparison to CSC cameras is simply pointless and irrelevant. The 14-140 (10x) zoom lens for my GF2 is a big lump and was over £600 on its own!

If the TZ spec meets your needs just buy it - quickly!

IXUS 310 is good but if you need a good zoom a 4x zoom not going to be any good I have the TZ20 and use the 16x zoom loads 4x would be no good to me
Also the IXUS 310 is F5.8 at 4X zoom this one is F5.9 at 16x so 4 times more zoom and only 0.1 F stop difference
