A quality alternative to the TZ6/7- sitting somewhere in between in terms of zoom, MP, but unlike the TZ6 this boasts 720p HD recording. You tube reviews seem very good for both Stills and Video quality. Seriously tempted to get this myself.

The DMC-ZX1 features a 25mm ultra wide-angle 8x optical zoom LEICA DC VARIO-ELMAR lens (35mm equivalent: 25-200mm). Panasonic has achieved the world's first incorporation of 0.3mm super thin aspherical lens and industry first 0.3mm spherical lens into the newly developed lens unit. This makes it possible to fit the 25-200mm high performance lens in a slim and compact body. Furthermore, in 3-megapixel resolution, the Extra Optical Zoom function provides additional magnification, extending the zoom power to 15.6x (35mm equivalent: 390mm).
This camera boast a myriad of useful settings features, which can all be accessed automatically using Intelligent Auto mode (iA) so that all you have to do it point and click. iA activates POWER Optical Image Stabilisation (O.I.S)., Intelligent ISO Control, Face Detection, Auto Focus (AF)/AE with Face Recognition, Intelligent Scene Selector, Intelligent Exposure and AF Tracking to ensure the camera is ready to take the perfect shot every time.

POWER O.I.S. is about twice as effective as MEGA O.I.S. at reducing low-frequency vibration-caused blur when pressing the shutter button or shooting with a slow shutter speed. So you can take beautiful night shots without blurring. Intelligent Exposure and AF Tracking, the camera does all the work in the iA Mode. Face Recognition function recognizes registered persons' faces and optimizes the focus and exposure settings.

A number of engineering improvements have been made to AF system resulting in ultra high speed yet accurate autofocus performance. Panasonic has also replaced its linear program processing with parallel processing to achieve a high-speed start-up of approx. 1.1 seconds.

The DMC-ZX1 can record motion pictures in high-definition (1,280 x 720 pixels at 30 fps in Motion JPEG format). The pixel mixed readout method enables bright motion-picture recording even in low-light settings. It also lets you use zooming when taking motion pictures. When viewing, with HD component output capability, you can enjoy watching HD motion pictures in stunning HD quality taken by your DMC-ZX1 by simply connecting the camera to an HDTV via an optional component cable DMW-HDC2. Panny say the autofocus is around twice the speed of the TZ7, but just lacks that extra 4x optical zoom, which i personally can live without. 8x is fine for my needs and at this price, it's the cheapest i could see.

One of the unique features of the DMC-ZX1 is the Travel Mode. From the top menu, you can quickly go into the mode and organize various information related to your travel such as destination, date, world time and so on. It's also easy to play back images by designating the date or period of travel on the calendar menu interface.

While the lowest price there any a few places selling it for just a few pounds more.

Not a great "bargain"

I've been waiting for the TZ7 to drop under £200 for ages, then I noticed this and nearly purchased as I need HD video, but unfortunately it's motion jpg and not MP4 or AVC HD. Oh well I think the Tz7 will drop under £200 after xmas.

Sub £200 on the TZ7 is the pricepoint for me too.
Like you i'm after something that will do good quality HD movies.

I think this is a nice balance of price/functionality/features for somebody that wants to spend just that little bit less.

I'm still on the fence not becuase of the price of this model, but purely because i'm indecisive and i need to think of a goodexcuse to justify this to the wife, or she'll kill me. After going to a wedding the other week, the quality of my mother in laws TZ7 pics were head and shoulders ahead of my ageing Pentax Optio L40 P&S.

got one from comet 2 weeks ago, for a few quid more with a 15% off voucher,

so this seems a the best price so far, couldnt wait anylong due to a holiday last week! fantastic camera, suits me over the tz6/7 as its that bit smaller, pocket friendly, great pic and HD vid too!
