Free lens bit:

Panasonic are offering a free 45-150mm telephoto zoom with the purchase of a DMC-G5KEB-K (G5 with normal 14-42mm kit lens - not the X lens or new version II kit lens). This needs to be claimed direct from Panasonic by sending receipt/serial number on box to them.

£399 bit:

Current retail price of G5KEB-K is as low as £449 at some retailers. Some of these e.g. Jessops and Castle Cameras are participating in a Panasonic offer of £50 trade-in value for any camera (yes, ANY) off the purchase price of a G5KEB-K.

Both these Panasonic promotions can be used on the same purchase, so £399 for a G5, 14-42mm and 45-150mm!! How can I be sure? The free lens arrived in this morning's post :-)

Maybe a link to one of the retailers showing the £50 off £449 would help your post?

Potentially good deal though I'm very happy with the £379 deal from JL a few weeks back for G5 kit with both of those lenses plus free battery (or SD card) from Panasonic. As that has probably expired now this could well be the best deal available but bear in mind that the G6 is out so prices will probably continue to fall.

Good camera by the way.

Yeah, 'potentially' is the word. I had a quick look and couldn't find a £50 off deal.

The £379 was a great deal. I managed to bag one, sell on the camera and keep the tele lens....cost me on balance £30 for the lens in the end after ebay fees. Have now paired my G5 up with a Panny 12-35mm lens and wow, stunning pics! (even with my crummy photography skills)

great find thanks they are they ok with free 45 150 lens deal if you have already had £50 trade in and are they ok with any old camera trade in
I have looked online can see any thing that could cause problems
Looks good camera think it has the GH2 sensor i know its no GH2 but lot cheaper
thanks just read your post see there ok with both deals on one camera heat added for great deal

hotyoda, you're right that a retailer link would be helpful to anyone who might want to take advantage of the offers but I could only find a manufacturer link so tried the novel approach of ringing the shop which seemed to work remarkably well for me. I'm sorry I missed the stupendous but expired £379 JL deal. £529 at JL now so I guess me and others who missed it will just have to see if we can scrape together the extra twenty for this deal, which has not expired.

Oscar222, afaik the G5 sensor is basically the same as in the GH2 and with similar performance levels. Not as good as the current Olympus micro 4/3 sensor but comparable to Canon APS-C sensors if dxomark is to be believed. However the Olympus micro 4/3 cameras either aren't so nice ergonomically imo or cost a fair bit more, and SLRs with their lenses are big. I looked at a Nikon D5100 with an 18-105mm zoom for £480 which should blow the G5 out of the water in all challenging shooting situations but could just see myself finding excuses for not taking such a bulky heavy camera out with me! Real-world performance of the G5 is said to be very good and at this price it's a steal.

Good bit of info there servirtresfrais if it comes close to D SLR s with APS C sensors would be pleased as not as bulky
I would think HD video would be better than most D SLR as most ones i have looked at I found quality very disappointing
Think i had high expectations with them having large high quality sensors but there seems loads of problems some dont
look as good 720p when your filming 1080p + rolling shutter, moire, poor AF(in video) and loss of viewfinder

Bought the G3 from Currys a couple of weeks ago for £179.97 with standard 14-42mm kit lens (admittedly I'm still not 100% sure whether I'm keeping it) so guessing not worth buying this even if it does seem like a good deal.

How does this camera compare with the Sony NEX-3N?

Original Poster

oscar222, yes, particularly good video camera too, except no manual controls and no exposure adjustment at all when vid already rolling, can set quite a few things before vid rolling though

tiggerloveslife, excellent price but in balance I prefer the G5 as it's a more rounded camera

chey, NEX-3N I believe has APS-C sensor that's superior to the G5 sensor, but sensors aren't everything ;-)

Thanks for the info servirtresfrais got G5 from currys yesterday no problem with £50 trade in (dug out very old broken camera)
Very pleased with video you can film easy with short depth of field as well looks really good was my main reason was after larger sensor camera.Even played with manual focus during video found could even do quite convincing focus pull
Like servirtresfrais says no exposure control once filming but you can set it up before and AF works really well while filming
Claimed free 45 150 lens from panasonic and ordered PK adapter of ebay cant wait to try my old lenses on it

if you buy from a panasonic store there is a 3 yr guarantee offer too

JL now only using trade in against g6, no longer against g5. Currys will accept trade in against g5, so have just taken them up om the deal and sent off for the free lens :-)

Having said that about Currys, they did need a little twist of the arm to agree, but the discount code IS on their system

Thanks OP. Picked mine up this afternoon after work so the deal is still on there system. The salesman was quite surprised when it came up though so they don't know of it off-hand.

I've also just brought one from Currys using the £50 off deal. salesman wasn't aware, but i told him, he checked on the system and was done deal
