I was in Jessops a few weeks back looking at a camera for video. Asked them what "camcorders" they had and I could see a smirk from the sales assistant. He then educated me on the new mirror-less cameras that are out and stated that the Panasonic G7 was great for 4k video.

Price looks to be fairly static since release date - I assume this is due to Brexit. This is the best deal I can find.

Enter code PANA30 at checkout to knock £30 off the list price.

Then there's an additional £50 off from panasonic via this link:

I am surprised the guys in Curry,s can educate anyone. Every time I go in there they are just standing about talking. I am sure that a lot of phones now do 4K recording

Excellent camera, had it a couple of years. Not often used it for video though

£399 after Panasonic cash back here. Had this camera since launch, and it's great value. Just remember that resolution isn't everything when talking about video quality, there's also bitrate, and lens quality of course: )

'educated' by a shop assistant.

Yes it took me by surprise
May be just me but I never get why anyone buys a "still" Camera for Videos , or for that matter visa versa .. Being advised by someone from Currys about a camera is like asking a Kwik fit fitter about car engine.

See my original post - It was Jessops (a camera shop) the boy knew his stuff.

Doesnt op say they were educated by a Jessops sales person? Even though the deal is currys....
Currently £449 at Jessops with a code, plus a code for a free tripod. jessops.com/p/p…723

It is a great camera for video or photos anyway. Decent quality 4k, and some nice lenses available. Also has a microphone input, if you want better audio.

Maybe worth paying a bit more for the bundle with the 12-60mm lens, sometimes its nice to have a slightly wider view, or more zoom.
419 with the codes above at curry’s. Went with the joby gorilla pod.

I just don't understand why the assistant would have a smirk after you asked about a camcorder because that's what you wanted and they do sell plenty, 24 of them online. It's a bit like going into car phone warehouse and asking for advise, they will have personally had a few phones like everyone else, but will have nowhere near the experience you can get from online reviews etc.
24 online but they had none in the shop. Surprisingly the boys job is to sell cameras and he knew what he was talking about. Strange but true. I’m assuming the smirk is the fact that a camcorder is not really something you see people with nowadays.

Sorry My mistake I saw Currys . Nice to get someone who knows what he's selling. Still don't know why someone would by a still camera for videos though , I assume the video fraternity still use purpose made cameras and casual video people use a smart phone . Video is a nice feature to have but not a still cameras primary function if you see what I mean ,. Bit of a jack of all trades master of none . I'll get me coat !

Nowadays many serious video folk use something like a Lumix GH4 or GH5, which is essentially the big brother of the G7 or G80. Its a much larger sensor than your average camcorder or smartphone. So better image quality, and low light performance, and shallow depth of field etc. Plus loads of decent quality lenses, and manual controls if you want.

Ive got both types, but although dedicated camcorder can sometimes be better at auto focussing, ie... tracking motorbikes around a course, the (physically) larger sensor of mirrorless & dslr cameras, coupled with their better quality lenses generally give a much higher video quality with far less noise than the camcorder.
{Both camera & camcorder being sub-£1k ... a camcorder costing a few thousand would give better results}

It is you as the marker place has moved on a lot in recent years.
Look at reviews of Sony and Panasonic cameras on dpreview as they go into great depth on the video features as they are so extensive.

Wex Price £449 after cashback
Jessops Price £449 after cachback

Price I posted on this deal £419 after cashback and voucher.

Find it cheaper with the same lens. Come on then!
Edited by: "goldmercury" 17th Dec 2017
He probably smirked because no one has used the word camcorder since 2005
On Jessops, add it to your basket then enter the promo code PANADISCOUNT. That will reduce the price to £449, which is what you pay now. Then you can claim £50 cash back from Panasonic after that.

Thanks might have to cancel my order with curry’s :). Ideally they’ll match this in the shop so I can give the boy at jessops some business.

Great camera and a good deal but I'd look out for a deal on the G85, waterproof, IBIS and no anti-aliasing filter.
Wow
Finally got round to making a video with the G7 here are the results - I am happy with the camera for the price it does feel a little cheap but can't complain considering the picture quality.
