Good camera, good price but there have been some TZ10 deals at this level recently (may have been 'refurbs'?).

Hot.
I'm looking for a camera at this price range to go traveling with, how does the panasonic compare to this?

cheers
Have both of these cameras, lumix although shorter zoom has more superior image quality. Also mode dial on olympus turns to easily and function buttons are too close together, resulting in mode settings slipping all the time. The price of the sz10 however is very good as I paid 60 quid more for it on 18th december !

The Olympus doesn't have the superior Leica lens for a start.
Cheers for the info guys, don't mean to hijack the thread so will create a post in requests when I have money in hand X)
Anyone know if this is any good in the dark?
It can be if you know how to use the camera and the manual settings.

When I paid £95 for the TZ-18 on Amazon boxing day deals, this doesn't seem quite so hot!
still hot
is this camera better than the canon powershot sx130 IS which is £99 from argos?

No camera is good in the dark, however some cope better with low light :-)

Are you wanting to use flash or natural light? This isn't the best type of camera for low light as it can get noisy with high ISO settings.

As it says in this review if your subject isn't moving the image stabilisation helps to avoid the higher ISO settings.

Ideally for low light you want a camera with a wide aperture (say f2.8 ) and a big sensor to minimise noise. Having said that I've used the predecessor to this camera successfully for gig photography which is a challenge for point and shoot cameras due to the low light (including getting them published so they aren't too shoddy). The video copes better than the stills imo. All small cameras are a compromise, the zoom range and quality of general pictures make up for the less impressive low light capability in this range.

If you can be more specific about what you would want to shoot I may have some further advice.

Photography Blog review of each camera below, apart from the lens on the Lumix being better, they seem fairly similar - both are rated as 'Recommended'.

Can't comment on the TZ8, but certainly the TZ5 with 10X was very good for its zoom capability.

As an example, the images on my review here were taken from the balcony at Shepherds Bush.

Here's some tips for getting the most out of a P&S at gigs.

The video on this range are good for low light, see this one taken at the O2. With a big venue the zoom really helps.

One thing I did find on the TZ5 was that the dynamic range of the sound recording wasn't good and had a habit of distorting at high volumes. Not sure if it was improved on the TZ8

Thanks so much Roger.I've got the f70exr and find it abysmal at pretty much everything. The zoom is dire and I don't know if it's a fault but doesn't pick up as well as my old cameras have.
I love my tz8, this is an excellent price! Hot
great camera great price
i have the tz7 and love it
i have the older TZ6 and love it

I have the TZ7 and love it! BUT it is poor in the dark. Good photos, super video but as for shot with flash, don't bother.
Excellent camera!
This is a fantastic camera and i have owed it 16 months. Bought it for my brother's wedding and the pictures were fantastic and HD video tremendous.

On automatic setting it just takes great pictures, even my Mom in her 70s can use it. :-)
I've reserved the last on in my area. Thanks. Been wanting one since I cracked my last Lumix.
OK camera, good zoom, but very poor in dark.
We use this camera at work and it really is fantastic. An amazing deal for this price too!
Thanks, picked up the last one in Malvern earlier today, very impressed, great find, heat added.
I also reserved a black one until Monday night at Elgar Retail Park, Worcester. First to message me and I'll reply with the number !
Thanks, just picked one up from Glasgow Fort. Spare battery listed here
Thanks, i've just got one, but was disapppointed it is quite bulky and chunky compared to my old camera!

Are the newer TZ10 to TZ20 models any smaller or slimmer in size?

Thanks
I have this camera, and Paid £180 for it on it's release.

It's amazing, fits in a pocket but packed with features. Really good slow shutter mode where you can get 'SLR like' quality pictures and very good capture of moving objects as well. The only negatives are it cannot record continuous video (it's capped and you have to stop and start it), the tz10 (next one up) doesnt have that issue. The other negative is no RAW format.

However I bought mine primarily for photos and holidays, but have ended up using it much much more due to its all round quality.

Amazing price so heat added.

How long HD video can you record continuously for then?

Thanks

How long HD video can you record continuously for then? Thanks

According to this review it's video is only limited by the card capacity. In my experience of the earlier model there was no limitation either.
Great deal - thanks for posting. Almost on a par with the wife's TZ20, but a lot cheaper.

Shame Argos are palming off ex-display models as new, though. Not the actions of a retailer you'd really trust for future purchases. oO
HD video recording on the TZ8 is limited to 8 minutes, reason is it only records in jPeg fromat which has a 2GB limit per file. Of course after 8minutes (it's actually 8 mines 42 seconds on mine) you can press record again and keep going as long as there is space on the card and there is a countdown on the screen. If you reduce the res it'll record up to 1 hour. If you need more than 8mins in HD in one go then the TZ10 records in AVCHD which gets around the limit but you then need some special editing software to work with that file type - also the TZ10 is more expensive.
Some say this is terrible in low light and others really happy with it. Id often be using it indoors esp at gigs just for my own use. On the whole would I be best with this or something else?

Mine wasn't factory sealed, it was open, had stickers peeled off the lcd screen, scratches and dirty finger print marks on the screen! It was the last one though and says its excluded from the 30 day money back guarantee!

I'm wondering if staff used these display models, as why do they need to pull off the stickers on the lcd screen if it is just going onto the shelf for display purposes?
Original Poster
crikey, there's no-way I'd accept ex-display as new unless they were going to discount it further

and btw they always exclude cameras from 30 day money back, as some ppl were buying going on holiday using them, then returning for a refund !

I've no problem with Argos selling an ex-display as new if it's just been unboxed and put on a shelf behind glass (which in my experience it has) than fine. If there are parts missing or it's been damaged that's different and it should be graded.
In fact many times with deals on here I've managed to reserve the last one at Argos and so if they hadn't sold the ex display one I might have missed out !
Read the comments on here and was wary of getting an ex display when picking mine up today - it was ex display, but inspecting it carefully there was no sign of handling or dust on the camera. I didn't mention this however and after a mild complaint was given £15 off. £99 for TZ8 - I'm happy.
Did anyone happen to buy one of the Always On wraps for this? Several reports suggesting that none of them fit properly, but if anyone found one that did I'd be interested.
Does the lens assembly retract into the body when power switched off. Can't find any photos without the lens sticking out.
